A family member of mines passed away today at 7:00 AM. She was on morphine since Tuesday, everyday thats what the hospital gave her. Was that ok? or is there something else they could've done?

Morphine is very commonly used freely at the last stages of life. Please don't worry yourself about what else might have been done. Pneumonia is one of the two usual ways Psp ends, the other being falls. Pneumonia is the more merciful, I think. I'm sorry for your loss. Please be at peace. Ec

Sorry for your loss but pneumonia usually is the final stage of this awful illness my husband lasted two weeks on morphine after he got pneumonia not a nice thing to watch but no more suffering. Thinking about you.xxxxxx

As both of the others have said yes pneumonia is common at end and morphine is given to ease pain and relax breathing, allowing the other meds such as antibiotics to work but usually by time morphine is used the patient has little reserves to fight the infection. So do not worry the doctors did what they could to help your family member.

Sorry for your loss...it's difficult when your loved one is suffering.I lost my Dad recently to PSP and he had pneumonia twice, which was awful. He was given one morphine shot and we were comforted by the fact that Dad's breathing became more relaxed afterwards. Hope this serves as some comfort to you. #hugs#

It's hard to say. Morphine is used for pain. If she was in pain they would do this to ease it and let her comfortably go. was she in a hospice or a hospital?

My wife has just died from psp and morphine was of great release for her what a terrible thing psp is my wife is now at rest but I miss her so much

My deepest sympathies. I hope you can find comfort and peace in your memories of happier times, and knowing how blessed your wife was to be loved by you. That's what we have, after all. Easterncedar
