Hi Shasha,

Yes, Amantadine is available in UK, my husband has been on it for about 2 months. Sadly, no noticeable difference in his memory or behaviour though. We had it prescribed from the memory clinic.

Bonjour, yes it is available in the UK on prescription. My husband took it briefly and it made a huge difference to his speech. However he got a UTI and it made all the normal symptoms much worse( agitation, confusion, disorientation) and he stopped taking it until the infection cleared. When he started again sadly the benefits did not reappear.

that is interesting as i too had to come off it due to problems getting it here and i too feel that the benefits have been diminshed

which is a great pity as of all the drugs my neuro prescribed it was the only one that had a really beneficial effect

Hi, That's interesting that your husband got a UTI on amantadine. My mom started taking it last September and after 3 weeks on it she became very confused, slurred speech and a uti that put her in the hospital for a few days. She was off the amantadine during that hospitalization and then restarted it a few days later after coming home. Three weeks after restarting the same thing happened again and the symptoms were so bad she was in a coma like state for 3 days in the hospital. She spent 12 days in the hospital then a rehab facility for 48 days. We never restarted the Amantadine. When I suggested to her doctors that it was the problem they dismissed my opinion and frankly could not come up with a diagnosis off their own as to why she went into that slump. Well I think there is definitely something to it because she has not had that happen again since she has been off it.

Hi, my husband has been taking amantadine for 4 months. Can't notice any noticeable difference but hard to say, he hasn't had any side effects so just keeps taking them. See the neurologist in October so will see what he has to say. Xx
