Hi Jane - not sure if this will help you and Brian, but my Mum kept getting regular chest infections, once she became less mobile (3 years ago). Mum was prescribed Trimethroprim (antibiotic) 20mls on a daily basis, and takes this continually. It doesn't stop you from getting chest infections, but it has stopped Mum having them so often. I know there is a concern that, if taken long term, you become immune to antibiotics, but we feel it's been worth the risk. It also helped to regulate Mum's urine infections (along with having cranberry juice once a day). Christine x
Dear Jane -
Now is the time for you to really test your GP - Tony's (who thankfully was so supportive) eventually left with us a small supply of the antibiotic that worked for him (sorry, can't remember the name, except that it began with A) so that we could stop an infection before it took hold - in his words "in case you need it at a weekend". Sod's law says it is usually a weekend, and probably Bank Holiday as well.
With your background as a carer, your GP should be able to trust you!
