I haven't heard much about eye problems. My eyes are always sore and the lids close. I know about Botox for the lids closing, but I haven't heard much about soreness. My left eye always waters as well. What are other people's experiences with eye problems?

Hi Lynda
Sorry to hear about your eye problems. As you know, there can be several eye problems associated with diseases like PSP. Some have non voluntary eyelid closure (blepharospasm), while others are unable to close their eyes. The blink rate slows down with many sufferers. These latter two symptoms cause "dry eye syndrome". The tears (made up of 3 layers of mucus, oil and water) become inadequate to keep the eyes moist. Thus, the eyes may feel sore and irritated and even inflammed. Strangely, they will also 'water up" more as there is an overstimulation of the production of the "water part" of the tears.
Often treatment is as simple as eye drops (although some are only effective for a very short time. For longer relief one needs something like Lacrilube, also called Ircal).
The danger of ignoring the condition may be damage to the outer corneal layer (conjunctiva). This really hurts and feels like grit is in the eye.
(Some people suffer with dry eyes due to the fact they do not fully close their eyelids when sleeping)
Hope you find some relief in using simple eye drops/ointments.
All the best
T.
My husband was diagonised with PSP last year although the doctors said he had parkinsons in 2010. he has a lot of trouble with his eyes. They get really red and sore. He uses a lot of eye drops with limited success. He has recently had botox to help his eyes stay open. We will see how that goes. I have found this site to be very helpful in understanding how he feels
Hi Lynda my wife was having the same problem this time last year and the doctor precribed eye drops but also I picked up from various sites that it can be affected by low humidity. In uk this is the time we switch on the heating. I got a gadget to check humidity and it was in the low forties. we raised the humidity to 55 /60% with wet towels on radiators and she was much better. She is back to reading the kindle and no longer uses the eye drops.

Sorry you are facing this. Dad's eyes used to water a lot, sometimes be itchy and eyelids sometimes closed involuntarily. But definitely the eye problems affected dad a lot. To the point of not being able to move his eyes down to see food on his plate or to read the paper. I think they gave drops for the excess watering but. They didn't do much else to be honest.
Eye problems go with PSP. How bad they are depends on each individual patient. My wife had watering eyes early on but that eventually went away with the use of eye gel. Later she had some bouts of double vision but again not many and not a major issue. She never had the issue of eyes wanting to close. Just shows more and more that PSP is NOT a one-size-fits-all disease. Hugs, Jimbo
Hi LyndaEllis
I have PSP. My eyes get sore (irritated) if I look at a computer screen too long.
I don't use anything on them. I just try to remember to blink and close them for a while now and then.
I get very tired in the daytime, I close my eyes, but don't sleep.
Hi my mum initially had very dry eyes that ached terribly she needed to use hyper mellow drops she was also unable to tolerate light so she wears wrap around sunglasses x also she loved an eye mask the plastic ones you can put in the fridge this was very soothing . I see now that she has quite watery sore eyes so I just bathe them with plain warm water ! I hope this helps ? All the best xx Louise xx Shrewsbury x England xx
Very dry eyes due to not blinking. So severe was the problem, i almost lost my eye balls. Mayo Clinic put us on gel drops every two hours, a humidifier, and salve at night. After two weeks. Infection cleared up with some steroids. Now, I'm on Restasis twice a day, steroids once every few days and drops occasionally, a humidifier when we are in Arizona (very arid). Seems to be steady. Can't see well because of limited eye movement and eye muscles not moving together. One of the worst parts of disease so far is not seeing. ONE DAY AT A TIME!
We used restatis which was a prescription from the ophthalmologist for dry eyes and used lubricating tears approximately 6 times per day. She sat with eyes closed often and always when the room was bright.
