I was just diagnosed 2 weeks ago and am feeling confused about my options. My doc is at NYU and suggests either radiation or focal therapy. Thoughts?

Thanks!

Focal therapy doesn't work much of the time:

That's why the FDA refused to approve it as a cure for prostate cancer. Find a new doc.

Thanks for this information! Very enlightening. I’ll go a different route than focal therapy.

Get informed how aggressiv your tumor is and then take your time

my Gleason score is 3+4, and then 2 areas that are 3+3. After research, I think I need to go with radiation. Right now I’m dealing with an uncomfortable infection.

Hey man, I am so very sorry about your diagnosis. Hearing the news is overwhelming and understanding your options needs time, which you have. One of the things to remember is there is no rush to make a decision. This is one of the “good things” about prostate cancer. You have time to research, talk to doctors, talk to those of us who have experienced it already. Get over your infection. Let the news settle in. Connect with others who have walked the road already. Start your research. Get opinions from different medical professionals. Let the answer that is best for you take root. The fog will clear and you will find your path forward.

Depending on your diagnosis consider doing Cyberknife. NYU Langone has a number of locations that do that and should be real up to date with it. After an MRI and CT scan it's usually only 5 sessions of about 30 minutes. It's painless and so far after 4 years my PSA is 0.5 as of the last test. Most insurance covers it.

Thanks so much! That’s the treatment plan that seems the best fit for me.

Great....go for it. I've heard just too much about all the issues with having it removed. If you have any questions feel free to drop me a note.

Sorry to hear, but it's early and you can research your choices, get opinions.

I agree with your thinking that RT is the way to go. And, as Tall_Allen says, not focal therapy. Check out my page and posts. Similar numbers. I did a consult at NYU, but I ultimately had my treatment at Memorial Sloan Kettering, and had RT. LDR brachytherapy.

Again, you have time and there are various radiation treatments. Talk to the professionals and choose what is right for you.
