PSA jump from 0.01 to 3.0 6 months after surgery

and path

I just got my 2nd PSA result today and it showed my level at 3.0...My prosectomy was done 3/21/24 and surgeon took lymp nodes, floor tissue, margins, etc and path report showed pristine results.

I also had PSMA and MRI with contrast pre-surgery and both scans showed no spread and fully contained to gland.

Surgeon left me a message with results and said he has never seen this jump from a 0.01 5/8/24 to a 3.00 4 months later and 6mos post op.

He is convinced it is a lab error and i will do another PSA test Monday 1st thing..I can only hope he is right and tell myself that nurse was only able to draw a 1/3 amount of blood for current test has i had not drank any water.

Anyone else ever seen this??

Thanks much in advance....wharr

Yes, I have seen occasional cases reported here and elsewhere of lab error. This can be the misreading of the sample, reagent failure, or reporting results of one person to a different person. Clerical error.

Thanks much for your response...I am hoping for human error and will be very forgiving if it was. Thanks again

While rare, the misreporting clerical error introduces a serious issue of its own. The patient (any condition or no condition) receives an alarming, out of range result. This spurs further investigation. At that same time the patient who received (in this case) a normal/low psa result not his own is comforted and unaware of the true situation with no reason to investigate.

Again, this situation is rare and labs and medical offices take much care to guarantee accuracy. More so now than in the past, in my experience, with digital records, bar code wristlets, double reading of results, verbal confirmation of identity, and so on.
