Decluttering stuff of more than 100 years.

I have made strides into clearing 100 years of clutter,David's family from way back in 1920 were hoarders and its all been collecting dust ever since, although a lot of it is not necessarily junk,in fact some things had never been used or even opened, but tough,it has to go,i cannot hold on to things in outbuildings which are full of stuff and if i offer things to people they expect it to be delivered, and i dont have the time to go around delivering when they are to lazy to collect and even charity shops dont want it,they are inundated with stock.

When faced with so much to do one has to be ruthless and not worry about it,but even so i believe it will take another year before i can see clearly.

I was like thst last year clearing my spare room, I dread to think how many photos I destroyed, I even came upon one of me in the kitchen of the family home cutting a cake, which you couldn't really see, think it was taken on my 21st birthday, looked at it, do I really need a, photo of me on my own cutting a cake, no destroyed it, sometimes you just have to be ruthless, good luck

Yes it's a difficult thing to do, especially when it's connected with a loved one. As you say though, sometimes you just have to be ruthless. I'm about to embark on clearing out the loft. There's stuff in there I didn't even know I had. Good luck with it all X🐰

When we cleared my parents' house we had fun doing Dad's shed and greenhouse. He was the world's first recycler I think- plastic food tubs, string, old bits of tools, wood, ribbon you name it, he saved it. We found a bag containing loads of twisted bits of foil- hmm drugs maybe?😊 opened them cautiously,to find lots of tomato seeds he'd collected from his home grown ones.!!Oh and a carrier bag full of out of date packets of pork scratchings🤣🐰

that sounds exactly like what i've found, string, margarine tubs, rotten wood, heaps of various wire,nails,screws....the list goes on.x

Well done on your achievement so far, I believe clutter also clutters the mind. I am a prime example, and have just started on my build up of paperwork. You do need to be motivated and also to have the energy required. Good luck with the rest. 🙂👍

Well done! Having a good sort out clears the mind and gives us a great sense of satisfaction.I still have an attic to sort out but I have to wait until I'm in the right frame of mind to tackle it though.

It's good you're doing that secrets but I don't envy you, it must be so difficult deciding what goes and what stays. All the best with it. x

I agree that eventually the moment comes to be ruthless, whether it's your own clutter or that of someone else. Dithering because something seems too precious and full of memories, or hate but it cost to much money are all too familar excuses for hanging on to things. Hang on for what? What you don't like today you are likely to dislike tomorrow too. Just because an item cost a lot, doesn't make it treasure necessarily. I like being brave and ruthless when I declutter. I have to wait for the right moment but once it's there, out it goes. And I've thrown lots into the bin during the pandemic. Waiting for charity shops to reopen was not an option! So go for it Roddy! 👍

Just be careful you don't throw out anything valuable. My mum wasn't a hoarder but did collect a lot of stuff. We found some Carlton Ware crockery, an old tin with a relatives medals inside, and best of all an original layout of the first ever advert on British tv. It was Gibbs SR toothpaste.

My sister and I took it to the antiques road show and saw Eric Knowles who said it had no value. Much he knew as we sold it in a specialist auction for over £1,000.

I always used Gibbs SR toothpaste and did so for many years until they stopped making it. Brilliant stuff, much better than I use now.

I have been in this house for 18 years, NOW I am finding old bills, receipts, guarantee, hospital messages, pay slips etc. My big sister, 'taught' me to keep them "indexed", after a few years, managed to repel big sister, 👏👏😙forming my own system, but yes I am a hoarder😪I collect medical "junk" I am a bit of a hypochondriac, you know the sort of things, better sleep, creams, bandages, pills [well past their use by date?] battery portable fans {using them for alternative purpose😗}, some I don't even remember what for 'things'? (actually some strange green pills), I put on as compost on my cherry trees {coming on very nicely thankyou?}. I shredded most of the paper 'things' but faulty shredder most of it will need complete house clean!BUT as you said I have to be ruthless, you've heard of spring cleaning, "but even so I believe it will take another year before I can see clearly.
