1/ Statue in honour of Mary Seacole, who nursed the British soldiers during the Crmean war. The statue is in the Hospital grounds.

2/ the London eye on the South Bank, the South Bank was devoid of people where it's usually over flowing!.

3/The Houses of Parliament from across the river.

4/ The back of the Houses of parliament from Victoria Tower gardens.

it's disappointing isn't it when you get attached to plans and look forward to them only to be told at the last minute they are cancelled!

Thank you Bazzak for posting these interesting photos from your walk today. It was just what I needed to see as I'm feeling a bit low at the moment. As I have a love of history I decided to research Mary Seacole and to find out why she doesn't appear to be as well known as Florence Nightingale. It certainly proved to be eye opening reading for me and all because you took the time to post such interesting photos Bazz. I would suggest that our members would also be interested to read more about this woman and I urge you and other members to research her story online as I did. You won't regret it.

Thanks again.

BTCCET profile image
BTCCET in reply to RoadRunner44

Yes she was a truly amazing woman and very underrated, fortunately these days in primary schools her name is mentioned alongside Miss Nightingales during history lessons so my Grandchildren tell me! take care xx

RoadRunner44 profile image
RoadRunner44 in reply to BTCCET

I am so pleased to hear that. Thats such good news. Do you mind telling me what age your grand daughter is and what year was she taught about Mary Seacole at school? I find that information so reassuring that people like this particular woman do have recognition and included in UK history.Thanks.

BTCCET profile image
BTCCET in reply to RoadRunner44

She was in year 2 when she was introduced to learning about Mary so she would have been 6 yrs old, she took a fantastic interest in her life straight away xx she's 11 now

You must be proud of her knowledge and interest in such matters She obviously enjoys history too. I wish her well.Cheers

Will look at yours later can't see properly I'm in park lol

The little parks here in Cardiff were full of mud first thing this morning when I went on my walk.

I went to the Florence nightingale museum there a few years ago and it was interesting.

How are your kitties? Baby is fine and still getting spoilt!

I went on the London eye years ago!

Hello stranger, been wondering where you are. Great photos - we stayed at the Premier Inn July 2013 as we had been invited to a silver wedding celebration on a boat trip down the river. I was terrified but really enjoyed it. We used the Slug and Lettuce for our breakfasts. It's a great area and never wait long for a bus. xx

MadBunny profile image

I went up it once. It was on a romantic weekend - which turned out not to be😁I was trying to impress my boyfriend with my best A level French . We decided to take the lift. Walked up the 1st stage. No lift. Carried on walking up . Still no lift......then he saw the lift going up the other side ..yes I'd got it wrong. And it sort of all went pear shaped from that point onwards...

Thank you for the info, amazing!! 😊🌈😍

Great stuff Mr B. I am very fond of St. Thomas's hospital as I had a life changing operation there when I was 27. I could see across the Thames to the Houses of Parliament from my bed, so I could use the clock tower to find out the time. I was admitted on January 2nd, so it was really quiet, my ward was almost empty! I was supposed to be in hospital for about 12 weeks, but I was actually only there for 12 days. It was such a change to my life after that op, I could do all sorts of things I couldn't do before. Lovely hospital. I shall stop reminiscing now. πŸ™‚πŸŒΈ

Bazzak profile image

Reminisce as much as you like Marnie,And a nice happy outcome. Yes the Hospital is lovely, I went to get my jab today and they could not have been more professional and helpful in anyway.

Glad you got jab. Probably get mine in April/May. Had an appointment at my local hospital this morning. I had forgotten that it's a vaccination centre until I got there and saw people I high viz directing traffic and checking people in the car park. Thought they weren't going to let me in for my outpatient's appointment for a bit! 😊🌸

Hi Bazzak,

Great to see the statue of Mary Seacole. I learned about her from Blue Peter, many years ago, and she was an inspiration when I went into nursing. There was even a Welsh lady, Betsi Cadwaladr, who also went to the Crimea, and nursed, but she concentrated on the individual wellbeing of the troops, the infection controls and decent food. There is a whole area of Wales' NHS Hospital trusts which is named after her.

I used to know London well, but I haven't been there for more than 25 years. I used to enjoy going up on the Waterloo line.

Cheers, Midori

Bazzak profile image
BazzakReading Rabbits in reply to Midori

Yes, Sadly, Betsi Cadwaladr died a pauper in London and was buried in Abney Park cemetery, London. A headstone was erected for her in 2012 and I understand there are plans for a statue in Wales, another special lady.xx
