Chawton, where Jane Austen lived.

For anyone who enjoys Jane Austen's books I thought you might like to see a photo of this recent small statue of her that is in Chawton churchyard. She has been placed facing towards her home in the village.

I was on holiday down in Cornwall about thirty years ago, when they were making the film “Emma” the costumes were so beautiful!

I do agree, the clothes were beautiful in that era.

Hi Billy61, Such an attractive statue and thank you for reminding us of Jane Austen's last home. Chawton's not far from me either, and she also has links with my city, as well as Bath. The village of Chawton, and her home, are well worth a visit, as is her final resting place at Winchester cathedral. Sadly, like so many people of her era sh died relatively young, compared to today's life expectancy, but she left behind the wonderful legacy of her writing. 🙏

Chawton is a peaceful place. Understandably very busy at the moment but a good place to visit when times are more 'normal' and the church is re opened.

That's a very good statue, I do like to see statues in places like churchyards.

It is a very good representation of Jane as I imagine her to have been.

What a wonderful tribute to a very talented novelist and justly deserved too.

I like the fact that it is small rather like the statue of the diver in Winchester Cathedral who is credited with saving it from sinking.

Isn't that just so lovely? If I ever pass that way I'd like to take a closer look.

Captain John Rolfe brought his wife back to England to meet Queen Elizabeth 1.

His wife was the Red Indian Native American...... Princess Pokahontas.... as they set sail down the River Thames on their return trip to America, Pokahontas was taken ill, and brought ashore at Gravesend( My home town) to be hospitalised where she later died.

She was buried in St. Grorges church churchyard.... today there stands a statue of Pokahontas over her grave.

When I can get out, I will visit the churchyard to get a photo, and post it here at a later date!

I live not far from Gravesend and have a sister living in Northfleet. Although the bronze memorial is in place in the church yard the precise location of her grave is actually unknown on account of the fact that the original church was destroyed by fire.

You are correct Nick, it was thought at one time she was buried inside the church before the fire!

Well worth a visit if you are ever in that area when times are more 'normal'and the church is open again
