Five minute mindfulness

Is lockdown getting you down? Really worried about the current situation with covid19? Mindfulness, (or keeping our minds in the current moment) can really help. It stops that chattering that minds do, racing on and making up outcomes which can worry and unsettle us but aren't really real.

Here's a simple little exercise that's quick to do whenever you want to unwind your mind and get back to what is, and not what your mind starts imagining what might come to be.

Listen to a piece of music, but not in the way you usually do. Usually we let the melody run by us as a continuous thing. But actually it's really only a series of individual notes.

Try listening to the individual notes. Concentrate hard on each one and don't be swept away by the tune.

It's best to use a tune without words and one that has a slower tempo, so that you have time to identify every single note.

Don't make it too long a piece, as it's harder than you might think to focus in this way for too long.

Why not give it a try and see if it helps?

I did a mindfulness course as part of a living well course.I found the mindfulness a bit difficult, but they taught a three minute mindfulness technique, which has really helped me.

Glad to hear Oshgosh. Even small amounts of mindfulness can be very useful.

Thank you Sue and what an excellent post. I sat on the bed the other night, closed my eyes, took a few deep breaths and felt really good afterwards. I've done meditation before and I know I ought to practice it more, it's enjoyable, relaxing and takes little time. What you've said reminds me of having a massage and the tune playing in the background where you listening to waves or birdsong, it's beautiful.🙏🌈😊

sounds good

This sounds good. I will definitely give it a try.

Last year I was sent on a hypnotherapist by one of my consultants. This didn't work for me. I wasn't sure about it but said I would have a go. I was half and half when I came home after the first session. He sent me an link to do at home with him speaking on it. I started to listen to it that evening but I found him very patronising so didn't carry on!!

Lots of love Lynne 🤩 xxxx

Oh dear, better luck with this then Lynne. I'm not very good with those 'talk you through it methods either'. There are a few other ways to do mindfulness in small chunks by yourself which I plan to share too, over time. So if this one doesn't work for you, maybe we'll come to one which will! Hope you've had an OK day today! 👍🙏😊🔆 xx

HiThank you!! I'm so pleased you posted this!! Small chunks sounds great!! Looking forward to your further posts on this mindfulness.

Lots of love and hugs Lynne xxxx ❤️🤗

"Keeping our minds in the current moment"? ...the best I can manage is gazing vacantly into space... which takes one out of the current moment!

I guess it's a technique too S11m. 😆. But that mostly depends on whether it really is space, or whether that sneaky mind is taking the opportunity of the vacant moment to have a little thought! 🤣. Take care!
