When the kettle packed up yesterday it also took out heating and hot water, this morning I've just gone to the fuse box, one side all switches are, facing up, the other side facing down except one which I've moved down, I've got storage heaters so won't know for a while whether I've sorted out, anyone know if I've got it right

In my fuse box up is on and down is off. So switches that are down means they have been switched off by the fuse blowing, or manually if you have switch one off.

Hopefully, you know that it is was the kettle that tripped the consumer unit - so, if you bin the kettle, the problem will not recur. Fuse boxes contain fuses - and consumer units have trip switches.

In addition to overload circuit breaker trip switches, consumer units also have earth leakage trips - to protect you and yours if there is a short to ground.

I have had similar problems twice - but both times it was not immediately apparent what caused the short - one time it was a loose wire in the washing machine - and the other time it was the cellar pump (This was confusing, as it came off the sitting room circuit!)

I hope you are now sorted.

If its a modern fuse box Jenny, fuses should be marked on/off.... all switched should be in the on position👍🙂

Hi. The switches on each breaker should be in the down position. If it keeps occurring then you have a fault. As S11m says replace the kettle and you should be god to go. If the problem persists i would advise getting professional assistance. Best wishes.

My kettle once tripped a kitchen socket in the kitchen so being daft I tried it in another one. Same again. I bought a new kettle and had to pay for an electrician. In my flat now occasionally a switch will trip and my lounge light will blow. I just put the switch up again. It's a pain isn't it!

Hope you have got it sorted.

Trips do not usually trip for no reason - How old is your flat - and has it been re-wired? sometimes a trip can trip if a bulb "blows".In my sister's house, the light flickered when you walked across the floor in the spare room - so, eventually, they had it re-wired.

If you are a tenant - tell the landlord or agent that it is dangerous and a fire risk - and tell them you want it re-wired?

This reminds me of what happened to me back in the 80's. I was driving my car in pouring rain and the wipers packed up. I pulled in and resigned myself to waiting until the rain stopped. Then I started thinking about a conversation I had in the pub a few days before about car electrics. So I gingerly opened the electric box and looked at it. Nothing seemed to be marked so I tried changing a fuse around. After a while I decided I could live without the horn for a while so put that fuse in the wipers one. It worked! I was so pleased with myself.
