Seen today on the television news regarding the coronavirus additional hospital units even doctors and assistants probably nurses not wearing mask properly.
If masks are not sealed at the nose and that is the problem this virus will continue no matter what is done. I'm no doctor ,i'm an engineer with yearsl of experience regarding the correct wearing of respirator masks. I would please ask the whole of the medical profession how on earth do they think a mask will protect the wearer when the mask is not sealed air tight at the 'bridge' of the nose?
Come on lets get this thing ironed out? Ist instance it was said masks do not protect the wearers = nonesense! now there is acceptance that masks do protect the wearers but they obviously are either not wearing a suitable mask that can be pinched to the bridge of the nose or if they have a clip to do this they are not using it....... which is it please. Even the public such as us have bought N95 masks which are white and have a nose bridge clip so that it seals when pinched so why do not the whole of the medical profession workers have that type of mask?
And what makes it worse is many of the public don't even pull their masks up over their noses!
The association of heating engineers are not split on the subject of filters because they are unanimous in the fact as I've said before that any mechanical filter cannot work one way. As well as that well known fact if the mask is not air tight over the airways the percentage of none sealing will be detracted from the N value ( in the UK) so if a mask is deemed by the statute as being N95 which means near enough 95% positive filtration down to 3 nano particles as stated in the specification P2 which is as small as a virus if the mask seals only 75% of all the airways then that mask that is worn has a minus efficiency of
100% minus ( 5% +25% = 30%) which is of course 70% efficiency.......
It should not take anyone long to evaluate that a mask must seal 100% to the face if that mask meets the 95% printed on it does it?
If you can explain to every one reading this that the association of heating engineers are wrong then please do explain what figures are correct?
Any flat mechanical filter which is a mask is bound to work both ways and not one. If anyone connected a filter to a duct it would filter with the same efficiency whichever way the air flowed. If a filter which is a mask please explain how this can be said to not protect the wearer but to only protect those on the exhaled side of the mask..... Frankly all the advice was a load of mumbo jumbo brought into publication so as to protect the low stock of mask that were available at the beginning. The tune has changed now but the efficiency has most certainly not changed but if it doesn't this virus will go on for infinity.
If you were made to breath in a room with cyanide gas in that atmosphere I would think that you would make sure your mask fitted perfectly (air tight) because if you did not pay attention to that fact then you would not last long now would you?
Thank you Micklemus for this brilliant and thorough explanation about masks! Where could I get these clips then to insert to make my masks more air tight?🙏👌
The best common masks for anyone to buy is the white N95 one with no valve on it as this type is called a respirator and are purely for the protection of the wearer. Amazon who I have no association with whatsoever sell them for about £2 each incl posting. I believe ours were made in India where many pharmaceuticals come from to the UK.
I looked on Wikipedia and there is a lot of info about many types of mask and I noted and it would be beneficial for those wishing to gain knowledge that even the green ones that are deemed to be termed 'surgical masks and are inferior to the white tighter fitting N95 masks are getting better in that some now have an electrostatic layer that attracts impurities through static electricity.
It is worth knowing that our, I say our for industry, where some screw or clip in filters sometimes one or two have designation to not just filter particles but also contaminating and toxic gasses. The body is silicone and fits air tight to the face and the filters can be chosen for what contaminant they filter. You must have seen the odd one worn by some on the television.
A pal of mine who retired recently was a life long sprayer and all he wore was a N95 mask which prevented death although he sprayed paint always with Cyanide in it.
Excellent post, reminding us all, and, particularly, health care workers, of the importance of proper mask wear, and the importance of a tight seal, with N-95 masks! Currently, I wear the N-95 masks with the metal clip, and make sure that around my nose, is a tight seal! Thanks for your sharing!
Thank you for that.... I know well that I do go on a lot but I mean to hopefully get the message across which I hope will save lives.
I was a diver many years ago and managed to re-suss a young chap who had dround. He had dived in too close to the shore and banged his head on the gravel. He was blue and basically, dead with cyanosis with eyes open out cold ...... He was whisked away in an ambulance when I got him round and I never saw him again but I've always been thankful I was able to save him (no problem).
