A New Mask

Dear All,

Quite recently, there has been 'Talk' regarding Masks. I mentioned that I had bought one, from an 'Independent' source- actually a Hairdresser, near were I used to live. I was in that area again today, with my Mother, and went into the same shop.....I know have a 'Lovely Variegated Green Mask', for which I gave £3. I can now Wash the 'old' one.

My Mother has/ is Looking at the 'Glasses Type' and, I believe, that she has now ordered one. I might look at a 'Band Around The Head, With a Visor, Type' as these don't ''Smother'' your nose. Maybe I'll look at these, even though I am quite 'Happy' with my current Masks...... Heck I just bought a new one, didn't I?!!!!!

I'm interested in what 'everyone' Thinks about, all this. This Country was, by Global Standards, very 'Slow' in adopting Masks- the Far Eastern Countries, have been using them for Months.

There are a 'Whole Range' of new Measures, being announced today..... So we will see.

Hi Andrew. As someone with asthma it took me a while to find a mask I felt comfortable in and could wear for a long time. I have now got quite a collection in various colours and patterns.

My daughter is in Vietnam. They wear masks all of the time outdoors, a pre Covid thing, mostly because of pollution levels I think, and maybe because of the sars epidemic that hit Asia a while ago.

I remember when she was here back last Christmas I helped her to pick out a mask, not that there was much choice then. Little did I know that it would not be that many months before I was shopping for some for myself.

Maybe mask wearing is something we should adopt as the norm. Not just to protect against Covid, but as a protection from all of the more common viruses that plague us from time to time and from colds. It could also be an idea for those who live and work in inner cities and children whose noses are at exhaust fume levels!

Bet it never happens though. Too many people seem to have some kind of inbuilt prejudice!

I was pondering the mask wearing as a norm the other day. Wondered if we don’t then catch colds, common viruses ( which our immune systems fight off and develop antibodies) will our immune systems weaken? Not looked into the science yet, just something g my mind was mulling over.

Somehow, as careful as I've been I did catch a cold! Must admit I was a bit unsettled by it. If we can catch a cold that easily with protections in place I wonder how easy it would be to catch COVID? 😱

Hi Andrew

I ordered some masks from a British firm online and they were made in this country. They are good masks and have the metal strip sewn into the material over the nose. Unfortunately my glasses still steam up.

As well as wearing masks we do need to be mindful if washing our hands as of course viruses stay on surfaces.

A strip of moist kitchen towel pressed along the inside top of the mask stops the glasses steaming up. or... sew a little button on the top of the mask to slide up under the nose bridge; keeps the mask under the glasses!

Thank you for the excellent tips, I will have a go at those.🙏

What sizes are they available in?

I am a little concerned that you say you can now wash your older mask.

Sadly I think many people are not washing masks frequently enough and others are wearing " disposable " ones many times.

It is possible to wear all masks more than once if you follow very carefully putting them on and off safely and store them safely too.

For example I have worn my mask for a very few minutes on five occasions, I have washed it each time because I only need a mask about once a week at most.

I am lucky not to be uncomfortable in a mask having worn one for much of my working life.

Take care, take precautions,stay safe

I was mine after every wear. I have about 5. I started making them very early and giving them to neighbours. They go in a bag as soon as I take it off. I wash my mask. the bag is then not used for 5 days. I have a stack of sandwich bags for clean or dirty masks. I also have 50 disposable for emergencies( not yet used).

Many of us with breathing problems find masks a nightmare.

Visors are brilliant and only cost about £3 and allow for normal breathing.

Not sure where you live, James, but in the US visors are not being recommended as a substitute for a mask but rather, to wear over them in extreme conditions. Medical staff including dentists etc. and those in the service industries such as manicurists/pedicurists and estheticians wear them given very close contact. Again, always over the mask.

Too bad as they’re a lot more comfortable than a mask but as not enclosed around nose and mouth, they don’t offer enough protection on their own.

All best!

Kathleen

I live in the UK Red. Certain medical conditions are exempt from masks, one of which is breathing difficulties.

For me, I don't go many places where there's more than a few people so I will stick to the visor. Best wishes.

Yes, I’m one of those technically “exempt” as along with Mets, I only have one lung. I continue to wear a mask in public to protect myself and others. I understand your preference - it’s certainly easier to breathe with a visor.

All best to you.

A visor is better than nothing but it’s not as good as a mask.

I have about 7 in different patterns. My boss’s mom makes them. Also we have a site in the states called Etsy we’re you can find all kinds of them that are made here by small business owners. I don’t know if you can bring it up in the UK but it’s worth a try. Lots of unusual patterns for every need!

Yes, we can. I bought some nice masks from Etsy. They have some good designs, not a bad price either.

Not an answer to your question, but thought I'd pass it along. I just read about a small study in China which found people who wear glasses are a smaller percentage of those infected. I know they've long said avoid touching your eyes to avoid colds and flu so I assumed that would be true for COVID. I have a face shield and just wore it in addition to my mask yesterday after a particularly harrowing shopping trip the day prior where people weren't social distancing, it was very crowded and many were wearing masks below their nose. Oh, and children running around WITH their parents twirling their masks around like toys. Then I read about the study.
