This is a view of Chief Joseph Mountain with the first snow of the season from last night. The leaves at the top are from a gigantic, ancient crabapple tree that is 1.5 stories high, about that wide, and at the rootline, about a meter across.
The mountain is good sized: For scale, that mountain is about 3 miles (4.8km) away, and at the highest, 9600 feet (2.9 km) in elevation. Since the house is at 4150 feet (1.3 km), the elevation gain is 5400, or about a mile (1.6 km).

That's early but I suppose it would snow on top of that mountain! Beautiful view though! It was bitter early today and yesterday morning! Nip in the air, brrr!
Looks like Chief Joseph needed his dressing gown on 🤗☺️😍
Years ago when I was working in Hahns Peak Colorado, had 1 1/2 foot of snow the 15th of August, 15 foot snow drifts. It has snowed every day of the year at sometime in the past.
Yes, we're not the Rockies - Boulder area had about 8" a couple weeks ago. I'm in Oregon (where some of the giant fires were), so you can imagine how welcome the small amount of rain and snow is! CA still could use some
This is a beautiful photo Wallowa, I envy you the beautiful landscapes where you live. I think the first post I saw of yours when I joined this forum was a picture of Chief Joseph Mountain from a different angle or place, so lovely and peaceful. Thanks for sharing. xx
Absolutely breathtaking! Where I live now, due to global warming, we’re lucking you see an inch of snow in winter vs when I first moved here in ‘83. This is when I miss back home, with the colorful fauna, crisp air &
the first snowfall not too far in October. Makes me wonder why I ever moved here! Oh, yeah, - to be miserable.
Hi Wallowa, you are indeed blessed to live in such a beautiful area. Your photograph is a reminder of the changing of the seasons, and as such makes me feel partially sad that summer's all but over, but in awe of how the seasons change so rapidly with no set calendar and at the same time give us a whole new perspective.

We just had a million acres of fire on the other side of the state, so it's soooooo welcome!
