And could the old English word maybe have come across from the German, as they still use the word 'selig' which means blessed, and seligkeit meaning bliss? Can't beat a bit of that. Very funny Narwhal10. 😀

Dear Callendersgal,

Yes, very likely indeed, we share a great deal with the 'Germanic' Races. Firstly we are ALL Saxons, yes we English have some Angle in us, that's true. If you put various 'Peoples Of the World' together, you would soon See, that English, French, Austrian, German and Swiss Nationals 'look' the same. The 'low' countries, Scandinavia, Holland and parts of Belgium 'look' different. The Southern Italians have a Mediterranean look, like the Greeks, along with Tunisians, Moroccans and so on.

Clearly these Peoples Migrated, across The European Continent together. We have a, historically speaking, Very Strong 'bond' with Germany- originally the Germanic States- Our Royal Family is German in origin. Had the Events, of the Twentieth Century, not occurred we would, almost certainly, have had a Much Stronger Bond. Mind you it's a Good Job, that we, Didn't inherit the German 'sense of humour' 😬.

So that our words, indeed language, has 'swopped' over the years is no surprise. Within Europe anyway, the German 'Kaput' and the American 'Ok' are widely known. Indeed if you Get Together, with a group of 'Continentals', you will be amazed at, just how much we have in common. So, even when we leave the European Union, we are Not- and Cannot- leave Europe.
