First adrenal test

I just had my first adrenal test by an Endochronologist. I was on the equivalent of 2.5 mg Prednisone for PMR and now on 15mg/day of Hydrocortisone for the past 2 weeks.

The cortisol test showed 22.6 mcg/dL (normal range is 4.0 - 22.0).

Doctor has not commented yet. It appears normal so I am thinking I should ask the doctor if I can reduce the hydrocortisone. agree?

and also what is a Synacthen test used for ? in which situations is it needed . would I need one now?

thank you.

I'm not sure how the hydrocortisone cross reacts with the assay - if you had taken it in the 24 hours before the test it might have given a false boost. I think you will have to wait for the doctor.

There is a lot of info about the synacthen test in the FAQs.

Whether you need the synacthen test or not is also up to that info - if your basal cortisol were below 4, then they would not need to because that would suggest adrenal insufficiency. If it really is 22.5, then that is normal and also would not normally require the synacthen test. It is done when the basal cortisol is inbetween the values to give more information about the status of adrenal function.
