Progress in hip and knee replacements

This appeared in my inbox recently and I thought those facing hip or knee replacement might find it interesting. It is from the USA, it is quite likely the UK may be rather later adopting some of the approaches but it makes very interesting reading if you are worried about the possibility in the future.

Not sure what I think about discharge in 1-2 hours mind you!!!

Hardly recovered from the anaesthetic in that time frame… even if it’s isn’t a GA.

My knee was done with regional anesthesia used in combination with motor-sparing nerve block , but not sure I would have been happy [on safety grounds] to be discharged that quickly.

Very interesting to me, as I had a metal to metal hip replacement in 2007, which required replacement again in 2021. The level of cobalt in my blood was at a very high level, and the surgeon found three pseudo tumours in there. I had had no blood tests at all, which meant they had missed the deterioration.

Things are getting better now, thank goodness.

very informative as I hope to have a TKR with Orthopaedic Surgeon and the Mako Robot, once I can get my anaemia sorted.

Very interesting and reassuring as I age waiting to sort out anaemia before they will do a THR on the other hip. I wonder if the back surgeons feel the same way. The move to steroid support is interesting especially when we continually hear about surgeons forcing people to come off prednisolone before they will operate.
