On Nov 18th at 1.05am I recorded a repeat of a programme on Channel 5:
Minute By Minute. Medical documentary series. Highlights of an operation to remove the ends of the bones of a patient's knee joint and replace them with metal-and-plastic substitutes.
Those of you who have had or are expecting to have a total knee replacement may find it interesting. It is (literally) a blow by blow account of a knee replacement with explanations running alongside filmed at St Barts in London.
I DO appreciate that I have strange tastes in viewing and it may well be too much for some. But it is amazing Anyone in the UK will find it on their usual catch-up TV but I'm sorry - that won't be available outside the UK (I recorded it using a website called FilmOn which is available for subscription all over the world as far as I know)

A lot of what they did was similar to my knee recontruction 26 years ago - so I was fascinated. I was conscious all the way through and chatting to the anaethetists who all wanted to practise their English. I could hear the B&Q soundtrack but not see what they were doing.
Ouch!! I was fine with caesareans with epidurals, but really don’t think I’d like the B&Q soundtrack. I read all about it, found knowledge helpful for recovery and rehab….but the soundtrack, no…😳x
I was just annoyed with the epidural for a c-section - wanted to see what they were doing and they said to look in the frames for the lights. I am so short-sighted I couldn't see! But epidurals are wonderful. When I had the metalwork removed from my leg in the UK they sedated me so I missed it all - had had to ask for an epidural in the first place. The female anaesthetist seemed surprised. In Italy they were discussing options with me and just sort of threw in "or you could have a spinal" quite off-handedly. They were delighted when I took that very happily - they seemed surprised though.
B n Q sound track, crikey I’m cancelling mine right now 😉this forum is supposed to offer comfort 😂Actually I watch all medic type programmes as the staff are amazing and their dedication unswerving.
You can't anyway - not available in the USA. As I say - it showed me what they did in my knee reconstruction 26 years ago - it was nice to put a view to the soundtrack
I watched a similar one before I had my knee replacement 20 odd years ago and decided then that I would probably have been happier if I hadn't. I remember thinking that the implements they used were remarkably similar to those I had in my technology classrooms. I knew nothing about the op, as I was put fully under.
Ha, funny. He was a runaway train that you had to control that's for sure. But having worked on all of them, from the first live autopsy, I can tell you that he was passionate about teaching people, albeit in a very Guther way that you had to dampen down. I think that is why Prof John Lee was there, to give it a different take.
I've been very privileged in working on things like this. Live heart operations, caesars, and a hernia op under hypnosis! I have also worked on The Royal Institution Christmas Lectures for the past 16 years, although sadly I have had to bow out of this year due to LVV, and this year if Prof Van Tam all about Covid! So I am going to be a visitor instead.
I have had a sneaky look at the script for this year and read that speech spreads the virus way more than just breathing even running! Guessing the exertion to speak is greater which would make sense. They will have 3 specialists for each programme along with Van Tam.
Christmas Lectures? Recorded with a live audience of children who apply for tickets.Rehearsed over several weeks prior to check experiments/demos work as they should. Prof (Lord) John Krebs was a good one on food. Food poisoning, the importance of washing your hands (ironic now) etc.... but that was back in the day when there was money to spend. All on a crazy tight budget now.
I am due to have my second knee replacement in the new year. I found the programme you referred to but sadly it tells me it is not available on demand.
