I have GCA and PMR and am having a knee replacement in October. Have been told to put up my Pred. several days before the operation. I am on 3- 31/2 mg a day. Do you think 5mg would be good

WHO told you to up your pred? And why? That isn't the usual procedure - it is usually up to the surgeon and, above all, the anaesthetist to make decisions like that.

I was told this at the pre operative assessment but I wasn't told by how much. I got the

impression it was up to me. I believe they suggested several days before hand.

Was that a nurse? Or the surgeon?

Ditto to PMRpro's comments ....and you will probably be given extra on the day by anaesthetist - but that's their decision.

I am amazed you were told to put up your pred as most orthopaedic surgeons want people to reduce before an operation. My surgeon agreed at 5mg but would have preferred 0mg!

my pre-op nurse told me not to take my dose on the day of the op! I queried it with the orthopaedic surgeon (I had a new hip) who referred it to the anaesthetist. The reply was to take my normal dose. The anaesthetist gave hydrocortisone during the op, and I believe I also had some administered post op. The advice from rheumatology was to increase after discharge if I needed it, from my 6.5 to 10 for a week, then 7.5 for a further week, then back to 6.5.

Crackers - the day you are most likely to need it!!! Which IS why I say NOT a nurse, even specialist ones. The anaesthetist is best and be insistent you tell them - and then tell everyone else just in case.

It was a nurse at a specialist World class surgery for knee replacements, the Horder Centre. I also now see another post saying they were told to put up dose. Maybe depends on dose you are on.
