almost made it!

After 8 years of dealing with PMR I got down to 1 mg again last fall, for the 2nd time. I was content to ride it out at 1 mg forever if things stayed calm. Life was good, I was healthy otherwise and was looking forward to being 70% retired by the end of 2025. On October 8th I came down with a sore throat. Within 48 hours I saw a doctor twice as the issue progressed so fast to the point that I was unable to swallow at all, unable to take medications including prednisone. That night I evidently awakened my wife to tell her I was having trouble breathing. She drove us the 45 minutes to our nearest hospital. From there I was life flighted by helicopter 2.5 hours to a regional hospital one state further west. I have no memory of this or other events until almost 2 months later when I emerged from a coma. I had been attacked by a rare, fast moving streptococcus constellatus bacteria that did a good job of trying to kill me. We all have this bacteria but usually it leaves us alone.

I bring this up only to point out how important it is for doctors to know that one is on prednisone. My wife pointed out to the team of doctors that I was on a very low dose of prednisone. The abscesses that had developed throughout my neck and upper check had kicked my CRP number up from it's usual 2 or 3 into the stratosphere at 156 !!! The doctors kicked my pred dose up to 6 mg, as they had their hands full already and didn't need to deal with any PMR issues. Surgeries, antibiotics and other steroids followed. Needless to say that 2025 will be a year of recovery for me. Prednisone is at 5 mg and can stay there for a long time as far as I'm concerned.

Very sorry to hear this… and well done your wife - on all matters.

One of the reasons we are often talking about wearing medical alert bracelets etc and/or having details about you being on Pred on your phone…the bigger issue is an adrenal crisis as much as PMR.

Best wishes for your recovery..

I wear 2 bracelets - one for steroid use and the other for blood thinner. The 3 times I went to the hospital, by ambulance , not one person looked at my bracelets. It was a good thing that I could tell them about my meds.

That’s not good - in fact it’s abysmal..

You are absolutely right. I actually forgot that I wear a medical information bracelet, too listing all my allergies to medicines and the fact that I have a permanently dilated left pupil. No one has ever looked at it. 😢

That's the only thing that really bothered me during my long stay at the hospital - the lack of attention to details. I can't tell you how many times I had a nurse come in my room with my medications and tell me it was time to swallow the meds with some water. Each time I had to point out the sign on my door that stated "all medications by IV or stomach tube". Evidently your bracelets need a flashing light and a horn to get noticed?

the last time I was being taken into hospital again one of the Paramedics actually asked me what my medical alert bracelet was !!!

I think the medical world is in a lot of trouble.

Blimey!!! Are you sure you wrote the right title? Sounds more like "Almost didn't make it"!!!

Very relieved it went OK in the end - but you have some recovering to do. All the best for that.

You are correct, it was very touch and go for quite a while I guess. I ended up spending 77 days at the "Hospital Hilton" before I was released at the end of the year. Once they started gradually telling me what had happened I was very pleased to be alive lol. Lost the ability to swallow in the process but recently have finally been able to swallow a little again. Just was informed that I can crush the medications and take with some pudding or pureed food instead of injecting it through the feeding tube. Works for me!

Onwards and upwards!!! Other than thank goodness you were got in time - all I can say is, I'm very glad I don't have your medical bills!!!

I was very fortunate to have selected an excellent medical insurance a few years ago. I didn't realize until now how good it was. If not for the insurance I would be bankrupt. I told my wife that she's now married to the Million Dollar Man lol! The total insurance bills so far totaled well beyond that amount. Of course, that isn't what they end up paying the hospital. Woe to the person without health insurance here.

I hope your recovery is upwards from now on. Just be guided by what your Dr is telling you. We are all different & we respond differently in different circumstances.
