Possible trigger of shingles by Prolia.

My endo put me on Prolia because I’ve been on prednisone for so long and I have osteopenia. 13 days after my second shot, which I get every six months, I came down with a mild case of shingles. I was vaccinated for it last year. It is a very mild case. I had a video appointment with my regular doctor. who’s actually a geriatrician. He put me on a little lower dose of Valtrex because of my age. I couldn’t figure out why in the world did I come down with shingles? When I wasn’t stressed, I wasn’t busy,. I didn’t have to do any special work over the holidays. I’m only on 6 1/2 mg of prednisone. I’m trying to figure out why.

I did a search of a medical literature about a possible association between Prolia and shingles I found an ongoing study examining the many reports of shingles after receiving Prolia. There was a paywall so I did not download it.

The package insert warns about possible infections.

Today,, 3 days later, I have no symptoms. I applied the remedy used for cold sores(acyclovir) with excellent results on the rash. my GP was an excellent idea and it did work.

No more prolia for me.. going back to strontium citrate with my GP’s permission.

Anything that pokes the immune system could trigger shingles - even a cold.
