ESR and CPR results

Good morning all

I am currently on 12.5mg pred, I have just had some blood tests done at my surgery to take to my next review appt with Rod Hughes, advised by him of a taper, and when I get down to 10mg to contact him again and go from there, I have had a couple of flares, headache, neck pain so have struggled to reduce down(there is a ? over my diagnosis as struggle with neck problems) I am due to have cervical spine Injections on 16th August.

My blood test results came back as ESR 8, and CPR 8, the ESR is down for me previously 9, but the CPR is raised usually 5.2 even before pred, the CPR has been passed as satisfactory, but is it, on pred? I have just had an out break of 2 Stye’s on my eye and a cold sore, feel ok in myself but could the CPR result be something else going on and the pred hides it?

Sorry I have waffled on, another thing I seem to do a lot these days! I just wondered if considering the test result is higher than my normal and I’m on pred for the inflammation should the GP of taken more notice

Thank you in advance for your replies

The problem with both ESR and CRP is that they just show inflammation - not the cause.. so could just be a reaction from the styes and cold sore - although it would logical to expect both to be raised, not just one.

However, it could just be a glitch - even a laboratory error - but if you are concerned, maybe ask for them to be repeated in a couple of weeks and see what the readings are then. If they are rising then that is the time to be concerned, not a one-off.

Thank you so much! All the wheels seem to be falling off at the moment, on the results it says normal results under 5, they’ve put satisfactory at 8,but I think as raised for first time in years and being on steroids they might have suggested it being reviewed, will request another test in a few months

I'd suspect the styes and cold sore - you probably have a virus going on to poke the cold sore into life. If they (or you) are really concerned then the correct procedure would be to repeat them in a week or two and see if there is a rising trend. If they are stable or falling - no problem.
