Recently diagnosed with PMR dosage 15mg daily

Symptoms improved but not gone altogether I was on amitriptyline 10mg daily but I’m unsure whether I should carry on my consultant didn’t seem to think that dosage would make any difference however he has been called home India family emergency so I’m left up in the air - I did stop taking but feel anxious and waking constantly throughout night ? Just wondered if anyone else taking amitriptyline along with prednisone ?

Now you have posted, you will see links to other posts about amitriptyline under Related Posts. There are quite a few on it, often to help with sleep and some doctors seem to think it will help with PMR - why I'm never quite sure because PMR isn't nerve pain.

How long have you been on amitrityline? This is an article about discontinuing it:

Some people will experience withdrawal after as little as 6-8 weeks if they stop taking it suddenly as I get the impression you have done? It is much better to stop it using a tapering regimen which should allow the body to get used to it not being there slowly.

Some do take it to as an aid to sleep rather than a painkiller- and you can see related posts now you have asked.

yes, I take it as a muscle relaxant & have done for years. I do NOT take it to help my PMR. I was advised by a consultant to double the dose (for fibromyalgia help), but I suspected it was causing nasty side effects. Recently, I’ve got fedup as it gives me bad nightmares & I’m so fatigued in the mornings. I gave up Propanolol to treat essential tremor as I thought it was the culprit…but it wasn’t, the nasty side effects continued..I stopped the amitryptylline & I’m sleeping much better with far less awful nightmares. I do have a bit of trouble dropping off to sleep now, but due to issues caused by other stuff…I have Osteoarthritis in hands, hips & feet, Trochanteric bursitis on left side! Sciatica on right side, Fibromyalgia, Familial high cholesterol, Hypertension, Hypermobility, Essential tremor, Orthostatic hypotension, Coccydinia & a Haemangioma, spinal. I think a lot take it with no issues, but it didn’t help with nerve pain, it’s not a tablet to help sleep! Istopped it by taking it every other night & then tapering, but I was off within ten days and no withdrawal symptoms & I took it for about 8 years.

"it’s not a tablet to help sleep!"

I beg to differ.

pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/363...

says

"Low dose amitriptyline is prescribed off-label to improve sleep maintenance in patients with insomnia disorder ...

... These patient-reported outcomes support the clinical observations that low dose amitriptyline improves sleep maintenance on the short term and that it is generally well tolerated. This further justifies randomized controlled trials in patients with insomnia disorder and sleep maintenance problems to assess the effectiveness and safety of low dose amitriptyline on the short and long term."

Yes, sorry, I was trying to mean it wasn’t him my mind) in the category of Zopiclone, diazepam, triazepam (that’s not quite right)! With friends input I’m finding it’s being dished out very regularly now…bit like statins or similar…can’t sleep? Try amitryptylline! Have a friend who takes them, there’s nothing wrong with her except arthritis, she’s 81, & sleeps well. But she had a spell where she wasn’t sleeping due to her daughter being sick, & they put her straight into amitryptylline….which fits just what you & DL are saying. I think it’s popular as no long term side effects? And yes, my friend has now taken them for 2 years! S xx

I've been taking it for about 18 months now- just before I was diagnosed with GCA & put on Pred. I take 10mg every night along with Mitrazipine (for depression/anxiety)The 2 of them definitely help me sleep. I suffered with insomnia for many years before I went on them, so to me they are a blessing- I actually get 6/7 hours sleep which is more than I've had in years! However, I do know I will have to come off both of them & I dread going back to not being able to sleep again. I'm still tapering the Pred-down to 5.5 mg now, so shall stay on it until I'm off the Pred & I have no side effects that are apparent.

Yes. I take 10mg daily. I am waiting for an appointment with the pain management clinic for a spinal problem. This small amount was enough to stop pain shooting down my leg from a trapped nerve. It's been great. I also take naproxen for back pain. I was told it is not addictive. There are side effects when you stop though. I had dizziness when I ran out of pills for a few days, but only when I lay down. Its a known side effect when stopping. So best to taper a stop as PMR Pro suggested.

I am taking prednisone ( currently 8.5 mg) I was on 25 mg of Amitriptyline for sleep for many years, but wanted to taper off of it as it can cause memory issues if taken long term. I reduced to 12.5 mg of it and was planning to reduce to 6.25 mg, but as sleep was so illusive once I started Prednisone, yet so important to my outlook and wellbeing, I decided to worry about getting off the Amitriptyline later on hopefully once I am on lower dose of Prednisone. I haven’t noticed any interactions and my Dr,s are aware that I am taking both.

I was prescribed Ami' by my GP late December 23 for it's 'anti-infammatory' properties as well as Pred.

Horrible drug for me, sent me loopy. Spoke with 4 friends who had been on it ( I had no idea) and all said the same, they all had to stop taking it. I stopped it after consultation with GP.
