Does Maxidex steroid add to Pred dose?

I had a new lens fitted on 2 April and have to use Dexamethasomex or Maxidex four times a day. Does this add to my total steroid intake with the Pred. Am on 10 mg after a flare and trying to get back to 7.5 as soon as possible. I also have a preventative asthma inhaler which is a steroid presumably.

Thanks

No problem with drops… and many are asthmatic as well.. and yes the inhaler does contains steroids… and it is safe to use both.

They do add to your overall dose. I remember my endocrinologist telling me this. I have nasal drops and I used to have oestrogen cream. I needed to stop them while I had my Synacthen test. They are not contraindicated but don’t forget them when your Adrenal performance is being measured.

Thank you both. I have a graph to show flares and pred dosage for quick reference for the GP, so I presume I dont put 10.1mg because of the these drops for 4 weeks. It says 0.1% on the bottle - that's very little.

Interesting the blurred vision I suffered in both eyes for long sight seems to have gone after the procedure although it was thought to be the PMR causing that. Just hope it stays like that now and it is not due to the drops which will finish in two weeks. Fingers crossed.

Now the stress is over in getting this procedure done, I hope to drop back to 7.5mg as soon as possible as I was on 11 mg for 12 days but did not feel confident to drop back so quickly!

No I would bother to add the 0.1mgto your graph… I didn’t bother with anything like that - think I was on 9mg when my cataract was done…

The amount that gets into your system from eye drops is very small - your dose for the GP's graph should remain at the oral dose.

I have had a steroid implant in my eye and asked the opthamologist if it would get into my system. The implant breaks don over 5 to 6 months. She said it wouldn’t get into my system from my eye.

I have also had Maxidex and I would say that didn’t get into the system as it would have raised my blood sugars. I am on eye drops now for eye pressure, these are beta blockers and by pressing the corner of my eye near my nose it stops it getting into your system

I think as long as you use the steroid drops in exactly the way they are prescribed in terms of frequency and dosage, there shouldn't be a problem. Pressing the corner of your eye as mentioned above will also stop topical treatments from being absorbed by running down into your nose as well. I feel myself something of an expert in this as I managed to overdose my poor dog with steroid eye drops by applying them too often because I was never sure I had got enough in the right place! Anyone who has tried to get eye drops into a dog's eyes will understand the difficulties! She developed a steroid myopathy and became very weak. As soon as I stopped the drops the symptoms resolved. Completely due to my own incompetence as a dog owner, but it does demonstrate that small amounts of whatever you put into your eye are absorbed over time.
