Prednisolone without food

Have always taken my Prednisolone at breakfast with porridge or Greek yoghurt . Refuse to take a PPI. Am due for surgery in a few weeks time and not to eat after midnight. Am only on 4.5 mg Pred at present. Will it hurt this once to take it with no food? I cant see a way around it.

A one-off shouldn't hurt. The alternative is to take it at midnight. And don't forget to make sure the anaesthetist knows you are a long term steroid patient - the rest of them don't matter, but they do, they are in charge of that sort of thing.

Ok thanks PMRpro - might take it at midnight to be on safe side. Noted re. anaesthetist. Will make sure they know.

Haaaah ……just found some 2.5mg gastro resistant in my box of pills and its still in date so guess the answer would be to take two of those and problem solved….

Morning, I didn’t know you had to take Pred with food. I always take my Pred at about 0900 hrs, no food until lunch time.

I’ve done this 3/4 times and normally thick greek yogurt , 6 years pred now off for 9 months.

Information leaflet in box states.

Pred should be swallowed with water, with or after food.

Taking it with food is to reduce the potential irritation of the stomach lining. It doesn't bother some people but it is a risk and often unnoticed at the time.

My pills always came in a pharmacy bottle (not a manufacturer's packaging) with a big sticker saying TAKE WITH FOOD. (They don't bother to tell you not to take it with calcium supplements which is also important, hope you know this?)

If you tell your surgeon that you

are on steroids, they will give you them during the operation possibly as that’s what happened to me recently when I had surgery.
