Nausea, burping and now vertigo

Mazxstitch profile image
22 Replies

Woke this morning tried to get up and immediately felt so dizzy I lay back down. I eventually managed to alert my husband and he came to help me.The vertigo eventually lessened then the nausea and burping started.

The dizziness is new but I have been experiencing the nausea and burping for a couple of months now.

I am on 4mg and been thinking that the adrenals were causing the nausea etc.

I have spoken to a doctor this morning and she mentioned BPB and has told me to drink plenty fluids and is prescribing something which my husband has gone to collect.

Would appreciate your thoughts.

You mean BPPV - Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo? It is caused by crystals having moved into the wrong place in the inner ear for some reason.

If so the best treatment is the Epley manoevre - you can find videos and descriptions all over the place on the internet. Some doctors will do it at the practice - but that means you have to get there and some are afraid the patient will vomit which does happen sometimes.

Thank you for replying so promptly. Definitely BPB was mentioned, she asked me about ears and I told her ears were fine.

It could sound like that on the phone I think - and there is no medical abbreviation I can identify that fits BPD. And ears do feel fine - it isn't due to infection.

I found that certain medications trigger vertigo with me, i.e., anything that causes dehydration. The worst is Carafate, a stomach medication. Triggers a two day attack of vertigo every time I take it. Drink a lot of water, and make sure the person doing the Epley follows instructions. Vertigo is ghastly.

What is BPB? Did the doctor see you in person?

Your post from 3 months ago said you were “absolutely fine”, so did this business start abruptly or just creep on? Is your lower gut ok?

It was a telephone consultation this morning. The dizziness just came out of the blue when I woke this morning. I just feel light headed now.The nausea and burping has been happening for a few months. Not every day but certainly a couple of times a week.

I have a history of gut problems.

Back a couple of weeks ago I had vertigo for a few days. I took one antiveret and it got better. I had some stomach upset too. It could be just a virus. Hopefully it will pass soon for you also.

They can’t tell if the crystals in your ears are out of place without doing a procedure and watching how your eyes move. So they are only guessing on the phone.

Hope you feel better quickly.

Exactly the same thing happened to me three days ago. When I tried to walk I was incredibly unsteady and whoozy. I was really relieved to get to bed. My blood pressure was 89/52, possibly lower. I am now feeling much better, blood pressure is now 97/57. Perhaps it is a bug, it came right out of the blue. It will be interesting to see if you improve in a day or two as I did.

Is it worse when you stand from sitting down, or sit/stand from lying down? I am unsteady & dizzy when I do the above, & after a lot of blood pressure tests I gave orthostatic hypotension…you may want to Google it to see if it fits? But sounds as if you’ve recovered, there’s a lot of bugs around! Our Surgery is barely working due to staff sickness! Ten days for repeat prescription, & Dr appointments unlikely. Triage in place…just! Hope you’re over it now, S x

No, it started when I was sitting down and when I stood up I staggered round the room. I felt nauseous all the time. I suffer from low blood pressure, but have never had these type of symptoms. I normally just faint!

Just faint? God forbid you smash your head and end up disabled.

We are not qualified to diagnose you here; we can only share our experiences.

I wonder, with the burping if you need a GI assessment for bleeding ulcer which can cause fainting if anemic. You mention you have GI issues but the GI system has lots of twists and turns. Do you have dark stool ?

Are you on any supplements or prescription medications?

I don’t bave burping, that was someone else. I usually know that I am going to faint. It first happened when I was five years old after a vaccination for something or other.

Judging by piglette's tales of her experiences, a lot of doctors aren't qualified to work out what it is either!!!

I’ve had the nausea part, too. Apparently it’s all part of my newly named blood pressure problem! I did remember you were a fainter!!! I did once last year on a beach…went to rescue something blowing on the beach, bent right down to catch it, got upright, fainted! But normally I just get nausea, dizziness etc…my blood pressure drops were described as ‘very significant’! But ive turned down the medication as I do suffer from high BP, & both Mum & my Aunt had strokes! Hope you don’t start getting it regularly, it’s a real pain! I seldom remember to get up slowly, then stand & think for a few moments, then move! I’m more like a small bull in a China shop! S xx

Hi,

I experienced vertigo a few years ago when I stood up from being in bed, suddenly I fell to the floor. With help from my husband I managed to sit on a chair, I switched on my IPad (whilst my eyes were closed) and then with eyes open filmed my eyes for a few moments. The recording showed that my pupils were moving to one side whilst I had no control. It took about 4 days for it to pass. I then researched causes and it sounded exactly like BPPV. Thank goodness it hasn’t returned. But I would definitely try the manouvre that PMRpro mentioned. I found lots of examples on YouTube. Good luck.

Me too. It lasted for about 4 days. Nausea came and went after day 1. I put it down to a virus.

I suffer from vertigo (mine isn’t connected to PMR, my Mum & Aunt were both life sufferers), the main drug treatment is prochlorperazine, which is an anti sickness similar to cyclizine, but also contains something to stop the room spinning! There is also the Epley manoeuvre, which makes me physically sick & unable to complete. There are other manoeuvres which are similar, & not so ‘nasty’, too! But I’ve never heard of BPB. Perhaps BVVP as PMRPro says?

note my diagnosis is Adult Onset Stills Disease which for me manifests as rheumatoid disease and has symptoms that are similar to PMR and Lupus (SLE). I am not currently taking pred.

I experienced exactly what you described in August with three further major events since. ER diagnosed it as Orthostatic Hypotension which I query leaning towards the BPPV thought instead. GP gave me the exercises but RA restricted movement in neck makes it difficult. This year I’ve been prescribed a PPI but was not taking it at the time of the first attack. Fir the vertigo I was given Prochlorperazine which works with the side effect of a dry mouth. Keeping a diary showed the dizziness follows migraines, not suprisingly.

I’m currently being investigated for other things and mild dizziness continues. Hope you find a solution soon.

I have had light headedness to the point of having to sit down or fall down twice this year. The woozy feeling got better in an hour or so but overall lasted a couple of weeks. I distinguish this from vertigo which makes the room spin. The light headedness was associated with low BP and was absolutely connected to adrenals. It might be worth checking your BP in the middle of an incident if poss.

Big thank you to everyone who has responded. The doctor prescribed Prochlorperazine and you have given me so much information on that and other aspects to consider. I am going to check my blood pressure, as I am still a little light headed.

I had the same issue and the doc prescribed the same. It’s made a huge difference, but I do have to take 3 tablets per day (according to the doc each one lasts around 6 hours).

Hopefully as the Pred reduces the need for them does also.

Good luck

There are so many different possibilities. I was given amytryptaline - within hours I was spinning off the planet . Eventual result was balance in one ear was gone. Cannot remember medical name . I suffer sinus so have to keep good ear clear or I am dizzy as for about a month .

Burping and nausea - been going through bouts of this for several months - I’m on 5mgs . No idea the cause of this , but laying on side with hot water bag and taking probiotics helps settle it . Crazy bouts of burping tho !
