Vertigo? and nausea

Yesterday while sitting at my computer I was suddenly overcome by extreme nausea and wild disturbance of my visual field. The latter I thought might be vertigo but I have not experienced it before, so who knows? I sat still with closed eyes for half an hour until the nausea subsided and my vision was then back to normal. I had a covid jab and flu jab three days prior with no reaction in either arm. I am almost 89 and about to descend to 5.5mg Pred having reached 6mg a week ago. Is this a random event or should I pursue it with my GP?

Sounds like a disturbance to your balance mechanism in the ear which can be caused by a range of things and can be fleeting or more drawn out. It’s horrible when it happens. If it won’t stop or it is intolerable, a doctor can prescribe medication but good first aid is a travel sickness tablet. I use this in preference. Have a read of this.

Thanks for your prompt response, SnazzyD. It certainly fits bacterial labrynthitis. If it happens again I'll see my GP. Best wishes.

Just monitor things, I had labyrinthitis many years ago - and it's horrible... Are you okay lying down at night?

..and I'd be include to put a hold on tapering until you feel better..

Thanks, DL: I'm OK at night and so far the tapering from 10mg Pred has been tolerable though I do have the Deathly Fatigue. I'm hoping the vertigo was a one-off incident , but your advice to stop tapering for a while is sound, and I will indeed follow it. Take care!

Just a note re: labrynthitis. Also diagnosed many years ago and symptoms which were far different from Menieres, was that the floor was moving (not my head spinning) and could not walk a straight line. Could not put head between knees as I truly had a swirling/nauseus feeling. Bed rest and Gravol (or benedryl) were only things that eased it. It is a horrible feeling indeed. I still have it occasionally and reach for the gravol! My Opthamologist just experienced it and it was after his COVID jab. So take care.

An interesting read for me - I had covid and flu jabs late last week and had been feeling a bit 'meh' over the weekend, not helped by a recurrent gum infection. I can usually clear that by making the gum bleed but this time it was much more persistent and I went to the dentist yesterday. I'd had 2 teeth removed before a major operation in April and was due to have a 3rd - the tooth that's affected now - but had been delaying it because it's the final 'bite point' remaining in my rear teeth.

Yesterday it was confirmed that it would have to come out and I'll need a denture. I was prescribed strong antibiotics for 5 days and it's being removed on Monday.

In the meantime, I'd obviously been struggling with eating on Saturday and Sunday. Sunday I'd cooked a roast chicken but yesterday ate very little apart from soup and yogurt.

I was hoping that the 'off' feeling would go away after my sleep yesterday afternoon but a couple of hours later I was sick and have felt a bit better since!

I'll have to invest in some travel sickness tablets if this happens again!

I'm sorry to hear of all your problems. Let's hope things improve for you soon. Onwards and downwards!

I was wondering whether it was connected with the double jabs we've both just received. Hopefully the vertigo will soon pass for you - I'm feeling a bit better this morning as the antibiotics start to kick in.

Who knows? I've not had a repeat of the vertigo but am still very tired and will take it easy for a few days. Take care.
