Hi everybody! So I was diagnosed PMR 2 years ago and started on 25mg of pref. I am now down to 5mg. I saw my Rumy a few weeks ago who did bloods ect and seems to think my PMR is over! However I’m due to have a hip replacement on the 5th December which I’m so happy about as I’ve been in agony for a long time.Rumy told me prob best to stay on 5mg to be on the safe side until after t hr e op and then reduce. I did not think to ask but how long after the op should I start reducing?

I just find it amazing that your rheumatologist thinks that your PMR has gone whilst on 5mg of pred. The tablets are doing their job and until you have been off them for a while it is difficult to tell.

I don’t think you should rush to reduce after the op. See how it goes

the op is very soon so my best wishes to you and hope it makes your life so much better and you can run around!

It is nice to know that you have a rheumy who can predict that your PMR is over. I wonder if they can give you the results of next week’s lottery too?

Have you told your surgeon you are on steroids? They like to know. I think I might leave at least six weeks after the hip replacement before thinking about reducing. You will have to think about about your recuperation with your hip first which is important.

He seems to think that as I’ve not got any pain in the shoulders where it started then the pain in my thighs is prob down to the arthritis. Told me to stay on the 5mg untill after the op then do a slow taper. I have to see him again in 6 months.

Why are you both making fun of a situation I have found myself in?

We are not making fun of YOU - we are making known our opinion of a know-it-all doctor who is talking rubbish,.

Ditto to PMRpro’s comments…

That’s not how it feels to me. I’d prefer both of you not commenting if that’s the way you “help”

That will be sad as are requesting that two of the most experienced and knowledgeable people in this site stop helping you with their very genuine and expert advice. They/we come across many doctors/Rheumies who a) do not understand that people are individuals and there is no "one fit for everyone" which can/does leave people needlessly suffering and b) sadly, really do not understand the long term use of Pred and how to treat PMR. The light hearted comments made were about these doctors NOT about you or your problems. They would never make fun of an individual using the forum or their problems. They both, freely, give up many hours of their time every day to provide us with expert help and support and if a bit of light hearted banter, between themselves, helps to keep them sane and us amused then I'm all for it.

Lighthearted banter “between themselves “ exactly BUT at my expense!! Nothing else added for support so what do you expect me to think????

in reply toHolycow2

I wish you the very best of luck. I agree...the comments seemed out-of-order to me too. It is so difficult to know whose opinions to trust. You must be feeling vulnerable and it is made more difficult when the decisions and opinions of the doctors who are looking after you are derided in this way.

I hope your operation is a success and that your PMR really is over...my very best wishes to you...

Hi the Arabist, Thank you so much for your best wishes it’s really kind of you! You’re exactly right I am feeling really vulnerable and found both of their comments spiteful and uncalled for. Again thank you😊
