I’ve just been asked to attend a pre op appt for 26th April . My last op was cancelled just as lockdown started.
The op is for muscle reattachment of my hip, I’ve had nothing but trouble with a metal on metal which was first done 1999, it was fine for 6 years and from then on I’ve had nothing but trouble, dislocation broken femur several ops to correct original op, the metal had corroded inside me you name it and it’s happened, the last op was for the broken femur and to remove old metal. This coming op will be the seventh time on it. I’ve no muscle over the hip and unable to lay on my side and have to use a crutch for anything more than just around my house.
My question is, do you think they will do my op I view of the fact I’ve got GCA, I’m on 4mg of pred.

I am sure it will be fine to have the op, on the basis that I was going to have major surgery and asked about this at the time. Basically I was told that they give a boost of steroids to help the body cope with the operation and then they put you on a quick taper until you are down to the level you are currently taking.
Best to discuss at your pre-op meeting but I am sure they will put your mind at rest.
No! I had a stay of execution! But I will know if I have to have it in a couple of weeks time when they reevaluate me. In the meantime heavy duty antibiotics which are bringing a whole heap of unwanted side effects.
I had a hip replacement last September on 5mg of pred. I have PMR. If they have asked you for a pre-op they are pretty likely to go ahead. Have you talked to the surgeon? I had to have funding for the op which was applied for by my GP. I think elective ops require funding to go ahead in UK, although the surgeon usually organises it.
Hi. Well this was arranged a couple of years ago, not through my doc, this was organised between the hip surgeon and the plastic surgeon, so I assume this is all ok, funding not needed via GP.
If you have already seen your surgeon you are fine. I had not got to that stage when the funding was requested. I also had to be OKed by the surgeon and put on the waiting list. You sound as if everything is fine and you are OK for surgery.
I doubt the GCA will matter - and you will get intra-op cover for the adrenal function. They may be concerned about the state of the muscles and other soft tissues. But surely they are aware you have been on pred?
They'll find out on the 26th at the latest then - but it might be an idea to try to contact the surgeon before because if they need to do more planning/thought they have more time. It would be a shame if they couldn't do it from that point of view.
I think they will do it. I recently had back surgery and was on 9mg at the time. It was not a problem and the anesthesiologist just gave me a boost during surgery. Best of luck to you!
Thank you, am very nervous, I shouldn’t be the amount of times I’ve had surgery, but it’s still a big thing to have done especially during this terrible pandemic.Xx
