UTI help

I am transitioning from 3.5 to3.00 predislone so far with no major issues. However I have developed a UTI which is not responding to over the counter medicine. Usually I have to resort to antibiotics but as it is the weekend and the doctor isn’t available I was wondering if temporarily increase if my predislone might help until Monday and if so what would you lovely people recommend. Many thanks in anticipation of your replies.

What are your symptoms, what did you try? How ill are you? Do you really need to increase the Pred? I’m presuming you mean sick day rules.

I have tried over counter medicine, havent been able to sleep, constantly on the loo with tingling in hands when going to loo.drinking lots of water.

What did you try over the counter?

Sorry, more questions which you can answer or not. Are you peeing good amounts each time or unexpectedly small amounts? Has the hand tingling happened since drinking lots of water or was it there before? How much water are you drinking? Where is the discomfort ?

I suspect you need to call 111 really as it is bad enough to be not sleeping.

I agree with Snazzy - you need to call 111. Pred won't help if you need abx. Have you tried d-mannose at a fairly high dose - that MIGHT help.

Thanks to Snazzy and PMRPro. Hand tingling is on peeing. I will try and get to the chemist to get d manrose.

I’ve used this to successfully nip UTI’s in the bud. Follow the dosage on the bottle but start with the maximum if it has set in. If you start to get pain the in kidney area, become feverish and nauseated don’t hang about and call 111.

Thanks Snazzy - I’ll try that

Mannose-D works better for me than antibiotics. A drink in sachets, almost immediate relief.

Thanks. I’ve managed to get some man rose but tablets . It’s holding it at bay but it’s still troublesome but hopefully another day of them will help crack it.

The ( soluble Mannose-D) drink is good because you need plenty of water and Mannose-D changes the nature of your pee so it doesn’t irritate. Cranberry juice helps too. I was told that it is a hazard for older people because we tend to retain urine, it is good to wait a bit on the loo and you find that you can go a bit more, or even a lot more. Try to completely empty the bladder each time you go. I am careful to avoid strong detergents and perfumed shower wash etc. All part of the joys of aging I am afraid but like most things, it can be managed .As Snazzy says though, if you run a temperature and have bladder pain, take a urine sample to your GP appointment.

I remember you telling us that now. Still, it’s a nice way to get more water down you.

I prefer water!!! It is an acquired taste.

I bet your mountain spring water doesn’t taste faintly of chlorine.

But if you are paying for cranberry juice - you might as well pay for nice water!

I have found taking a dessert spoon of cider vinegar in a beaker of water twice a day really helpful for a UTI, if you catch it early enough. Once it is cleared (you might need an antibiotic if it's really taken hold) having the cider vinegar once a day helps to prevent further infections. Cider vinegar has the added advantage of lowering sugar levels, beneficial for those of us with pred induced diabetes type 2.

Hope you get some relief soon, it's a miserable condition.

I am on UTI 10 so far this year and am on the urgent list for urology, where I had a course of ialuril in 2018/9 for a previous chain of UTIs. I am also down to 3.5mg. The surgery told me by phone on Thursday that, although my dip was positive, they take no notice of dips for women over 65. They may choose to send the sample away. Nice...

Having tried the herbal route I did try 111 and had antibiotics within an hour and a half which for a Sunday afternoon was amazing I thought. I’m fed up with just the few I have had so my greatest respect for you weathering so many. It is discouraging but I guess we just have to fight for what we think is right - not fair and not all us golden oldies will but unfortunately necessary. Take care.
