Not seen anything. But the algorithms which seem to rule social media these days may have decided you "need" to see all this stuff. I think you can block anything you don't want to see. Personally I find FB disappointing these days, but the "For you" presentations are usually things which interest me (art, nature) I have Adblock installed, I think that helps. :D

thank you I was just concerned as to why they had suddenly popped up advertising T Shirts

FB, for the longest time was trying to bully me into disabling Adblock for their site. I just kept ignoring them or reporting the comment and finally, they stopped. I was a member of the FB PMR support group, but everytime I opened FB there were so many posts, I had to put the group on "pause" for awhile. It was quite overwhelming really. Keep your Adblock. Cheers Heron!

No but Facebook seems to track your activity online and offers you subjects that it thinks you are interested in. It gives me stuff about minerals, supplements, yoga ... and cats.

in reply toSeacat30

it’s the FB algorithm, it’s is primed to track your interests using key words and deliver “matched” topics, links ads and other content. I’m not in FB but I believe you can block this activity via your account settings. If I look at MnS bras for example online my hubby gets FB ads for lingerie on his FB as we share the same IP address at home . It’s the same with shoes etc, he preferred me to look at cars or power tools 😂

In theory yes you can stop it but you can't in reality. Facebook has chucked me off twice in recent weeks for trying. It obviously thinks I am a bot. Anything that puts cookies on your device feeds back into advertising. It is harder to escape them on some sites than others. Healthunlocked does it.

it’s strange isn’t it how it knows what we are researching 😱

No, it’s not strange - any site you go on [from social-media to shopping and everything in between] is collecting information about you and your IT habits…. all about the market trying to sell you something…..

in reply toDorsetLady

isn’t just! The other night we were watching Dragons Den and a shower water softener device was pitched....... 3 minutes later hubby gets a FB ad for shower water softeners. Of course with TV coming via the internet these days it’s no surprise.

Given the amount of times I’ve moaned about my GP on here I’m expecting George Clooney and the cast of ER to turn up any minute now 😂

Have you asked on the FB Group? As l read FB is asking people to post a photo & comment to various groups - your Admins will want to know l’m sure……

if it’s in a closed PMR Facebook group you can report it to the administrators on the drop down list. They get a lot of spam.

Fwiw:

U-Block Origin keeps my browsing interface 99% clear of ads in all contexts.

Privacy Badger strips all PII out of data transmitted by my browser.

In fact, I had just joined the Facebook PMR group this week. However, after only two days I, too, received way too many posts and it seemed there was little oversight such as we get here so I "unfollowed" that group. This group is far superior thanks to PMRPro, DorsetLady, and many others who help make this a very useful source of information! One thing for avoiding "tracking" by Facebook (or phones) is to turn off your microphone (then turn it back on for Zoom or Facetime, etc.)

Oh, and I forgot, I use DuckDuckgo when researching anything as it doesn't track you like others do.

I have none of these problems - I have Adblockplus installed which removes most ads. Lots of sites try to cammand me to disable it - in which case, most of the time I just go somewhere else.
