I have encountered a problem I wasn’t expecting. My glasses do not fit properly due to my moon face, the frames are rubbing and uncomfortable, and the heat from my rosy cheeks steam up the lens. Spoke to my optician who checked my eyes and said my present prescription does not need to be changed so reluctant to pay for new glasses unnecessarily. I have dug out an old pair which have much smaller frames but the prescription is an old one but managing ok with them. Hoping moon face will reduce in time, so I can go back to preferred frames. A minor irritation in the great scheme of things, but definitely unexpected.

Moon Face and Spectacles
This becomes a pretty expensive disease all in all. I have had two new pairs of glasses because my prescription has changed twice. I have encountered all kinds of unexpected expenses. Would new lenses in old frames or one of the cut price opticians with deals not be better? It is important to take great care of our eyes and this disease can drag on. 7 years so far for me. Eye checks are a big part of my self care because of the dangers posed by GCA eyesight loss, Cataracts and Glaucoma.
I wear varifocals so they are always expensive, but luckily my eyes seem not to have been too badly affected. I have been seeing the same optician for a few years now and I have confidence in him, so reluctant to change. This was first time I have seen him since being diagnosed with PMR and he was very interested and took extra time with his examination. I did ask about having new lenses in old frames but because they are varifocals still quite expensive but am going to bite the bullet and get them done next week. So pleased to be generally feeling so much better that this caught me by surprise. Something else for friends to comment on “do you know your glasses are steaming up?” YES I have noticed! Makes a change from them telling me how well I look!
I had to give up wearing contact lens because of eye problems, mainly dry eyes but also an allergy to something in one of the lens solutions. I never changed my glasses - I moved them up and down my nose! I've recently gone back to a very old pair with a slightly different prescription which I feel more comfortable with. I was lucky, I gained weight around my face but never became moon-faced.
It is a pest though!!!
I've noticed that my glasses have become tight in the last couple of weeks, not had a problem with steaming up yet. I haven't had my eyes tested since the onset of PMR 3 months ago, so I guess an optician's appointment is next on the "to do" list. I'm still in the middle of various tests following my recent visit to A & E. In the last week I've had a second CT scan, at another hospital over an hour's drive away, presumably to reduce the waiting time, two ECG's, an asthma check and a pneumonia jab. Today is my long-awaited appointment at Urology for frequent UTI's and on Wednesday I'm due for a PNR blood test. My blood pressure is high, hardly surprising, and the Practice nurse's comment was "you do seem to have rather a lot going on". I have decided to book a private bone density scan, as I am reluctant to take Alendronic Acid unless it is absolutely necessary. The good news is that the slower taper seems to be suiting me better and keeping the pain and stiffness away.
I’ve noticed my current shape frames don’t look “right” on my face anymore now that it’s rounder. I have gone back to wearing an older pair more rectangular in shape which I feel suit me better at the moment. Multifocals are expensive as well here in Australia and the lenses are cut for the frames so not easily changed. I agree, an unexpected consequence!
