jumping muscles

I wondered if anyone else experienced jumping muscles with Pmr. I get this in my legs and back, I was also wondering if it indicates that an increase in steroids is in order.

Not sure what you mean by "jumping muscles." Twitches? Spasms?

Yes, I get them. But have no idea what it is from. I assumed PMR, but it might be the steroids

I most certainly did. It was a really bizarre feeling. I starting taking magnesium and that was the end of it.

Do you mean like Restless Leg Syndrome. If so, yes particularly before diagnosis. Only occasionally after talking prednisolone.

I suffer terrible cramp in my legs...I take Magnesium too and I think it's helped

I get them too. Mine aren’t like restless legs, but feel like a muscle is twitching (usually upper arm or leg). The twitch is also visible. Thinking about it, it hasn’t happened for a while. I started taking magnesium about a month ago in case it helped my finger and thumb joints. So maybe that helped

I never particularly considered whether the cause could have been PMR or prednisalone….just thought it was one of those things

Yes, I have had jumping muscles around my hip girdle, mostly at night but occasionally during the day but only when sitting down. I can’t remember whether it was before or after starting Pred but I think mine might have been due to anxiety. I don’t get it much at all now but I never increased my Pred as it wasn’t something that bothered me too much, it was just a bit of a nuisance.

I had occasional muscle twitches with PMR pre-pred so I'd say it is unlikely to be directly due to pred. Muscle cramp can be due to pred lowering magnesium levels in cells. But whether increasing pred would stop it - don't know. I doubt it though,

I have experienced this. Legs jump, twitch and generally feel restless at night. I spoke to my gp and he suggested trying magnesium. I did and it has helped. Watch out you don't take too much as magnesium can act as a laxitive!

How much magnesium is good and where from?

Any chemist or health food stores, H&B in the UK. The recommended doses are on the packs.

As PMR says the dose is on the bottle. I bought my last ones from Tesco.

I have been getting muscle spasms in at the top of my left arm almost my shoulder - it happens regularly I can actually see the twitch. Very disconcerting, so is it PMR or steroids? I have only been on them for 5 months I am now down to 7mg per day from 15mg

I have had times when I cannot keep my legs from moving, jumping and twitching. I think it happens when I get too low on prednisone dose. It has only happened when I am sitting and has not disrupted my sleep. It may be from PMR or prednisone doseage. I am unsure. I have been on prednisone for almost two years. I just had a flare after having covid and being treated with Paxlovid. I also relapsed a few days after completing the anti virals. I was sick for 3 weeks but fine now.

Wow, I never thought that my jumping and twitching could be pmr related. I was diagnosed in June but I’m sure that I had pmr for several years. I’m back to 20 mg after going down to 10 mg., with rising ESR numbers. Lately I notice my fingers and arms jerk, especially when holding something, like my iPad. Yesterday I had a dexa scan and my legs now do too. I’m learning so many things from all of you, thanks.
