Twitching Muscles

Hi

I sometimes suffer from twiching muscles which feel really strange. Sometimes it can occur in several areas at once and feel like a bubbling sensation under the skin. Does anyone else have or experienced this problem.

I am currently on 6 mg of prednisolone and appears to be ok. Some minor aches but usually when I have done too much. Due to see my Rheumatologist on the 11th December and will mention it.

I used to have twitching muscles before I went on pred, usually eyelid or in my hand, but it seemed to improve after starting pred. I get sensations like electric shocks - but that is different.

Thank you for your reply. My eyelids also twitched before I was diagnosed but this is more generalised. I had a blood test 4 weeks ago and apart from a slightly raised white cell count, everything else was ok. I am due for another blood test next week & will mention it at my appointment with the Rheumatologist.

Hello, does you diet contain enough potassium and magnesium? Just s thought.

Last visit to doctor, I mentioned I get random twitches occasionally, so she said next blood tests I've to get magnesium levels checked. We'll see how that goes. They're not that bad,I just need to be careful to not twitch at wrong moment when doing online shopping 🙄 Could buy some strange mistakes.

Not a bad idea - except your muscles can be low on magnesium but your blood levels be fine. Have you tried just taking a magnesium supplement? You can't really take too much - it has a laxative effect if you take more than you should!

May try that then, if as you say, can't take too much of it. I often wonder about supplements for that reason. Thanks again for more good advice.

Stick to the RDA to start with - it'll be fine.

I took a combined calcium and magnesium supplement 6 months ago but stopped as my calcium level was elevated. It will be something to ask at my next appointment.

That might be part of the explanation, because if you had extra calcium then your calcium/magnesium balance might have been out of whack. A little extra magnesium probably will not go amiss. Often we don't absorb magnesium when we have too much calcium in the system, so the combined supplement might not have given you as much magnesium as you thought. You can get a kind of magnesium which is applied to the skin and absorbed that way. Or you could soak in a bath with epsom salts....

Thank you for your advice. My previous raised calcium may be the reason. However it has been normal recently. Will mention it at my next appointment.

Will definitely ask about it for my next blood test. The twitching has been more noticeable the past few days but maybe because I am more aware of it. Thank you for your reply.

in reply toMitziecat

I used to find being a bit stressed and tired had me twitching.

I have also noticed that. I am trying to reduce both. Thank you for your response.

Hi. I think my diet is ok. I was taking a calcium & magnesium supplement before diagnosis but had to stop it as my calciium level was high. It has been normal since. Mind boggling thinking about all the different nutrients required.

When I get restless leg twitches, a big glass of orange juice usually settles them down.

Thank you for your reply. I will try that.

Yes, I was getting an annoying eyelid twitch before prednisone, and occasional random twitches elsewhere. Muscle fatigue? Stress? Lack of restorative sleep? I tried balancing my minerals but no change. I think for me it's mainly lack of sleep makes it worse. I also have Restless Leg Syndrome, it's inherited from my dad and my uncle's, so probably doesn't help. I just ignore the twitches now and they are less obvious.

Hi. Thank you for your reply. Definitely worst when tired or stressed. I am trying to ignore it. Will mention it to my Fheumatologist as I have an appointment tomorrow.
