Itchy Scalp
Hello, the issue of new or worsening irritations, allergies and intolerances at low dose levels does seem to crop up fairly often. Whether this is due to a re-emerging histamine activity that has been previously suppressed I don’t know. I had itchy skin, food intolerances and hay fever pop up somewhere in single figures of Pred doses. It wore off over a year or so, I can’t quite recall, but it did hang around.
I've had a really dry, itchy scalp all through the PMR journey with dry skin and hair. At 5mg Pred. it's still there but I wash my hair infrequently (about every 10 days) and rub baby oil into my scalp about 30 mins before washing. Yes, sweating makes it worse but over-washing even worse!
I have had very itchy scalp as well drives ne crazy...have had pmr since 2019 and itchy scalp since then
Could consider asking about topical steroids on prescriptions- Synalar gel which is very mild and formulated for hair covered areas has done wonders for my scalp which, in addition to burning during the initial suspected GCA symptoms, has had psoriatic patches for years that commercial anti- dandruffs were probably making worse. I was fortunate to get checked over by a dermatologist as part of the initial investigations just to check I hadn’t got shingles or an infected skin condition that could be causing GCA like symptoms.. Shouldn’t use them long term though but I will be asking to have a supply so that if symptoms recur I can get to it immediately. One side benefit of the Pred and the topicals at this early stage is that my skin is better and clearer all over than it’s been in decades! Have to enjoy it while I can and hope I don’t get steroids acne later!
