I've had a sore tongue for 3 years since being diagnosed with pmr. My dentist just said its typical with autoimmune illness. I looked up Thrush but I didn't have white patches. My tongue always feels like I burnt the tip of it. Toothpaste irritates it. My n ew GP gave me oral dose of Nystatin for 2 weeks. I may have some improvement unless it takes longer to heal. My sense of taste is dulled also . I had covid which really inflamed my mouth but that got better. Im at 4,5 mg prednisone. Its just an anoying feeling . I think my tongue gets smoother instead of rough. The tip area is a bit pinker in color also. Anyone else have this?

What sort of toothpaste do you use? I found the only thing that sorted the sensitive teeth and sore mouth that came with PMR was one of the Sensodyne range - everyone is different so it is worth trying various ones. But I also get a sore patch on the tip every so often - no idea what it is but it feels as if my tea was too hot!
I have a sore tongue, but now it is more off and on at a lower dose of around 2mg. I am not sure about my sense of taste, I think it is none too good anyway along with my sense of smell.
I too get a sore sometimes on the tip. I use a mouthwash along with brushing twice a day which usually helps.
Avoid toothpastes with Sodium Laurel Sulphate which many people are allergic to. I have no idea why manufacturers still include it in their recipes. It used to give me mouth ulcers.
I used to get to be sores and a sore tongue. I use a sensitive toothpaste, make a point of brushing my tongue twice a day after brushing teeth, always use warm water when brushing and avoid carbs. All that has worked. Tho at Christmas time it happened again. Pretty sure it was the huge bag of homemade cookie varieties a friend gave...🙂
I get a sore tongue after visiting the hygienist. Have done for years. I think the scraping leaves rough edges on my rather wonky lower incisors and my tongue rubs on them. Luckily it only lasts a few days.
I too suffer from this intermittently. But I have discovered the (New) Sensodyne nourish gently soothing toothpaste. Unfortunately it does contain sodium lauryl sulphate but it relieves all the problems of white, sore tongue and the lack of sense of taste. Been using it now for almost a week and my tongue is clear, pink and by the look of it a great deal healthier than the rest of me!
Hi, paperroses,I thought I was the only one dealing with this. Yes, the tip of my tongue always feel irritated or burnt. For additional reasons, I asked my pcp for a B12 anemia test. Sores on the tongue are one symptoms of that. But I also have been on ppi's for years and was recently taken off my folic acid, because my doctor couldn't figure out why I was on it. Weak muscles is another. But no, my B12 was fine. But my tongue is still annoying.
I also have this, often spreading further round my mouth. I would echo that it's worth trying a toothpaste without SLS. Some of the colgate sensitive repair and prevent don't have SLS, as well as some of the sensodyne ones, but on the other hand, it seems to exacerbate oral dryness. I did conclude some time ago that SLS wasn't a culprit because the symptoms didn't immediately clear up when I stopped using it, but now I realise that it needed a longer time for the reaction to die down. It also takes a little while for the problem to appear when starting to use it again. Apparently some allergens can take up to 20 days to disappear from your system.
Yes Paperroses, I've had the same difficulty with my tongue. As PMRpro said, it feels as if I've burnt my tongue with very hot tea. I use Neutrafluor 5000 + toothpaste from the dentist to help my teeth, which have never been good, but now seem to be badly affected by Pred. Other toothpaste really hurts. During summer I enjoy a MacDonald's choc. frappe. Doesn't fix it, of course, but is soothing.
