A Thank You

I think it was Mrs Nails or Dorset Lady who mentioned taking Magnesium for restless legs. I was being kept awake for hours with this problem in legs and shoulders but within one day of taking it I was able to relax (still not sleeping well, but that's another story). Thank you very much - this site is so helpful.

Hi. I the information on the label says 2 tablets a day and they're 375mg. Got it at Boots.

You got me worried there! I've just checked the label and 2 tablets = 375mg in total. NHS website suggests 270mg should be enough for women, so perhaps I'll try taking one and see if that's effective.

I did take 375 but then read that that was too much around 300mg so I chopped them in half but have been feeling so tired that I might go back to 375Thank you

Mine are 240 mgs of Magnesium and 10 mgs of Zinc, the bottle says that you can take two but I find one tablet does the trick with cramp and restless legs. The make is New Leaf.

Everyone is different - in some people some forms of magnesium can have a really laxative effect but not in others. The version I can have prescribed here just gives me the runs - but needless to say the one that probably costs the most and I have to pay for I can take loads (I use it for cardiac arrythmia episodes).

In the context of cramps, magnesium is magnesium, you choose the one that you like using. The other part of the substance name may relate to something else being helped. Does that make sense?

Thanks it does make sense. My husband also takes magnesium for his heart. He takes a product called SloMag. I’ll check out the dose in his.

I've been reading up online about Magnesium + Zinc. There's a suggestion that Zinc would interfere with the absorption of Calcium, and as I take that, and Alendronic Acid, I think I'll check with the GP before ordering some. I tried taking just one Magnesium tablet (187mg) but this didn't quite do the trick.

Good idea! Although a pharmacist or nutritionalist maybe better informed. I have a high calcium diet and a small amount of zinc in the magnesium supplement. This seems to be ok reading on. Good luck!

I checked with the pharmacist and she says provided I leave a couple of hours between taking my Adcal calcium, to allow absorption time, and the Magnesium and Zinc there shouldn't be a problem. At the moment I've got plain Magnesium but I've ordered some combined pills.

I find it’s helpful too 😊In fact I don’t know what I’d do without it. Only heard about it on this site - medics had no suggestions…

Glad you’ve got some relief xx

Apparently tonic water also helps.

I don't know how much evidence there is to support that but I have seen it mooted in many forums - given the low price of tonic water it could be worth a try?

It is touted yes - but if it does work it must be a dollop of placebo effect. The amount of quinine in tonic water these days is fairly homeopathic! Quinine used to be prescribed but a lot of doctors won't (or maybe can't) prescribe it now.

There is some quinine in tonic water but really only enough to flavour it. According to Harvard health newsletter 83 mg per litre, where therapeutic doses are 500-1000. However the extra fluid intake is helpful, which may be why some people say it helps. They are drinking more.

I will have to tell my wife about the magnesium. Maybe get her to switch to G&T's as well.
