The Princess and the pea springs to mind! Can you improvise with pillows between knees (if side sleeper) or a soft scarf or something under hips...

Yes got all sorts of tricks up my sleeve. I stood at reception in my nighty and asked for an extra duvet so I could cover the springs on the old mattress.

The best thing about our campervan was that it was "our beds" we slept in ;)

I think that will be the better option

Had a sleeping table last night, that solved it, but I don’t like to rely on them

Kendrew profile image
Kendrew in reply to Avadip12

Whats a sleep table?? I've not heard of one of those before.

Sorry...I've just realised you meant sleeping tablet! Predictive text?? 😄

What a peaceful view! Isn't it a shame that we can't take our own beds when we go away? Enjoy the rest of your time in Bonnie Scotland.

I did! Best thing about caravanning!

We used to have a touring caravan and used to stay on smaller sites. Our boys loved it...made more friends and were freer than they would have been in a posh hotel. We have lovely memories.

My brother was too late getting his holiday dates one year to book anything so we put our touring van on a site for them in the lake district. They had always stayed in mobile homes - they commented on the difference on a touring site. They usually went out every day to entertain the children - who refused to go anywhere because within hours they had made friends! Had never happened in static vans.

Happy days! We stayed on a farm one year. Youngest used to collect eggs, eldest helped to muck out the cow sheds; the obligatory wellies came in handy. The farmer had a son the same age as our middle son who spent the following two consecutive summer holidays there. I could go on but might get the sack! 😉

Holiday on the farm is very big here - some even come to spend the summer working on the harvest for nothing but their keep. They make hay every month or so - no shortage of work

I think that's great! I can imagine the camaraderie when the day is done.

Learnt to drive on a farm holiday when I was twelve, a tractor twelve gears forwards and reverse, milking etc, absolutely loved it.

Now they’ve got a joystick, and an interior more like a luxury car - with a price tag the same as a house……and my 22 year old grandson just loves driving them!

Just as well, as it’s his job.

I've just bought one of these for hip and shoulder comfort. It comes in a handy carrier. All you need is someone to carry it for you 😁.

(Other brands are available)

Mattress topper in carrier
in reply to OldPenny

I’m looking to buy similar so your comments on how comfy it is would be good to hear. Like you it’s to support my hips, shoulders and knees which hurt most in bed. Hope you benefit from it. 😴

Hi. I'll let you know how I get on. It only arrived yesterday so please bear with me. OP

Thank you

I really needed this topper as my bed is rather firm and I was particularly troubled by upper arm pain during the night. Although I would recommend it, my night pain has reduced somewhat as I've started taking 2/3 of my daily pred dose before bed and it seems to be doing the trick. I have PMR and am currently on 11.5mg.

I hope that you can get similar relief from your discomfort. A more comfortable bed must be a good place to start.

I got 6 months ago and it has been truly brilliant. My new mattress felt so hard and this just transformed it. I definitely sleep better as a result. Taking one on holiday is a great idea.

Avadip12 profile image
Avadip12 in reply to OldPenny

Yes great idea, in a hotel with an old knackered mattress, I always ask for one

We are driving the highlands north coast 500 in a few weeks with 10 nights in 8 different hotels. I think I’ll get a topper as shown my Oldpenny in this thread. Only thing is I’ve developed sudden excruciating hip/lower back pain (RA?) and generally feeling unwell however it’s 4 weeks yet so time to improve. Your picture is amazing and I hope you enjoyed it.

"weather is beautiful " Are you sure you're in Scotland? Seriously, try and book one of the newer Premiere Inns, the beds are great. totally bellying the price you pay.

And, as someone allergic to the feather bedding so beloved of the “top” hotels, PremierInns and Travelodges always have non-feather duvets and pillows (Yes, I know you can usually ask to _not_ have feather bedding, but it’s something else to remember to do!)

Avadip12 profile image
Avadip12 in reply to Flivoless

Yes I heard that about them. We have a small dog with us . Chain hotels don’t allow dogs
