Holidaying and new beds!

Hi all. On the last day of our week away in Kirkcudbright which has been wonderful apart from one thing. We tend to book AirBNB and get a house for all 4 of us but my word, the beds are awful and I'm on the sofa.

I clearly need to ask more questions about the standard of the bed before I book because I just can't get away with a rubbishy bed any more.

Anyone have any good tips for travelling? Portable toppers or anything really to ensure a good padded night sleep. I thought it worth an ask for next time at the end of August.

Thank you

The joy of our caravan and later campervan was I knew exactly what bed I would sleep in!!!

Sleeping on a sofa is almost always bad news - a bad bed won't really be saved by a mattress topper that is small enough to fit in the car.

Oh I so agree. Our bed in our little bed is just as comfy as our bed at home. Don't know what we would do without our caravan !

Possibly a couple of pillows to fill in the hollows? When you do the ratings afterwards, suggest the owners of the bnb test the beds frequently!

Love the squirrel!

The problem is more that the beds are like planks of wood. Unyielding! 😂 I will take my pillows next time though, that will help.

The squirrels were such a joy to watch.

If it's the hardness I wonder if something like a natural fleece would help? I know the big ones which cover the whole mattress are very expensive, but one can get a fleece which is just about the right size for the human body to rest on. I know because I looked into this a few years ago (must have been before PMR diagnosis) but ended up not needing one after all so I haven't had the chance to try it.

That could be a plan. I'll look into it thank you.

A local sheep/wool farm had fleeces from single sheep for sale and it looked like one would be just enough for me to lie on and cushion those oh-so-tender limbs! I was also looking into the bed-sized ones (for a fortune) which come from Australia.

I've invested in wool duvet and pillow lately so can understand what you mean when you say small fortune!

Worth it?

Yes, absolutely worth it. I very rarely wake up feeling clammy and sweaty now. Go for it!

Good idea, Heron. My son recently stayed in an Airbnb that he was perfectly satisfied with except for a small but irritating thing (don't remember what it was). He wrote a good review and sent a separate message to the owner mentioning 'the thing' and offering a suggestion. Owner wrote son a good review in return saying how clean and tidy the accommodation was left 😀.

Oh honestly, the sofa is infinitely better than the bed! House is lovely otherwise...

I suppose you're right, there's nothing that portable that will help. I must ask detailed questions..

I bet the vans were great. Home from home..

If it is a single bed that just needs a bit of softening, a fairly thick synthetic duvet might be enough - and packed in one of those vacuum bags to make it smaller maybe? I used to roll one up and put it in a pillow case to use as a cushion in the car ...

Yes that might work. I have a spare that I could use, plus a vacuum bag.

I have checked the reviews for the Norfolk place we've booked later this month and they do mention the very comfortable bed!

Just hope it isn't a soft soft soft one then!!!!

Hi, Don’t know what else to add to everyone’s suggestions, but I love the squirrel, 😀.

Just a thought, try looking on trip advisor, as you may well find information about the b&b or hotel, there are lots of info about the rooms, the beds and so on.

I always take my own pillow(s) at the very least. Spare duvet would help but a topper may be possible with vacuum packing. If bed is that bad, anything would help but not cure. I have raised issue about poor bed before, and it was changed. Owners said they did not realise, so a mention could be worth it.

Good point. The house was great otherwise but I will.say the beds are incredibly firm on review.

If the owners were told, they might even realise that providing toppers would benefit them and those who like sleeping on the floor and those who like comfort could be catered for!!

I saw the owner as we left today and did mention it. She is reasonably new to AirBNB and I think the feedback probably helped whether she liked it or not.

We take our own pillows everywhere. I may be OTT but I can't bear the thought of putting my face into a pillow that has been breathed into by scores of other people. Shudder!!

I always worry what the bed will like as I’ve had so many holidays sleeping on what feels like a brick. its the 1st thing I always check.
