I’m sure this information is available here somewhere but I’m too panicked to find it. I am currently struggling with severe panic attacks and have just tested positive. I already have the PCR test but don’t know whether they are still being used. Originally it was to see whether some new tablet should be prescribed. Has anyone experience of this please?
I’ve just spoken to 119 and there’s no need now for the PCR test. My lateral flow test has been registered and I should have a call within 24 hours to discuss whether I need the anti-viral pill.
My next question is, should I up my Pred dose or just stay where I am?

Thank you for your reply. I’ve just edited my post with the new procedure regarding the anti- viral pill. I’ve been SO careful, it’s hard to understand how on earth I could have picked it up.
This newer Omicron variant only has to look at you and it can infect you!! A study recently found that a single drop of fluid from the airways is enough to infect someone and a sneeze or cough can propel it several metres - the only real protection you have out and about is wearing at least an FFP2 mask that covers both nose and mouth and frequent hand washing. But EVERYONE needs to be wearing such masks for real safety,
Yes, we can live with Covid, but some measures would keep everyone safer.
Do you know whether there’s any advice on increasing Pred during infection? I’ve just phoned the rheumatology dept at the local hospital but I’ve had to leave a message and it could be a couple of days before I get a reply.
It is all in the Sick Day Rules which are linked in the Pinned Posts and are also to be found under the FAQs. We do say to check with your doctors but obviously your GP appears to be not very clued up either! 111 doctors might be better - but that isn't usually an option during the daytime! And if you get the call mentioned by 119, that advisor should be able to say. No guarantees though!
Then the Sick Day Rules would say go to 12mg - you are definitely in the adrenal blunting range if not suppression, If it were me I'd do that until I had spoken to the "do you qualify for the antiviral" assessor and don't forget to mention you are a very longterm pred user.
Good advice from PMRpro regarding sick day rules. Thank you for the edit on your post. I hope your symptoms aren't too severe. Best wishes for a quick recovery.
Thank you. I’ve had a phone call from 111 to say that “someone” will be phoning me today about the antiviral treatment. I think it’s a question of “watch this space” !
Good…just don’t be disappointed if you don’t get it…not everybody on this forum fits the severely immunocompromised description (& it’s good news if you don’t, really!) take care!
