We’ll soon be looking for annual holiday insurance, the first time since I was diagnosed with PMR and all the various meds associated with it.
Has anyone found holiday insurance more expensive with steroid usage or doesn’t it make any difference? [knowing insurance companies, it will make a difference: doesn’t everything?🙄]

Depends on the country where you live - the UK rips off anyone if they mention anything non-standard! I've not paid extra for PMR or for pred the Austrian-based company we used here. But not cheap like many UK policies. Everyone pays similar prices - rather than ripping off anyone with a "label"
Also depends where you are going - bear in mind Europe will probably cost more with the UK now being a third country, not sure what they did about the EHIC cover.
When l ‘only’ had PMR it was only a £10 addition for the whole year on our Banks Inclusive Insurance - this year it was £385 - but that’s because l have Angina, high blood pressure etc - the list goes on…..But it’s World Wide Coverage & actually better than l thought!
You just gotta pay up if you want to go away & there was full Covid Cover/Repatriation etc.
Yes - l’m back from my holidays (how apt) there was No WiFi as such (a bit random now & again) but came back to Son, Daughter, Charlotte aged 3nhalf & Baby Theo all down with Covid, then Grandma & her husband!…..So if we’d have been here we’d have walked into it 😱
Oh, wow! Glad you had a good holiday, but thank goodness you weren’t here! Stepgrandson (asthmatic age 12 has it for second time). But ‘they’ keep saying it’s just a cold, yeah, right! Oh & it’s past it’s peak (yeah, right). Hope your family all do well, & get over it quickly, & please take extra care…with the daily deaths from Covid so high…! S x
Crikey, Mrs Nails, your £385 sounds an exceptional deal, having spent the afternoon getting quotes. We're only looking at Europe cover and the cheapest deal thus far is £320 for us both. I'm going to keep looking!
I found just PMR made very little difference to price. Adding cardiovascular stuff and high BP topped it up quite a lot. But then I found Staysure. Very good all round. Including worldwide and Covid cover.
I haven't paid extra for pmr, having stressed it was well controlled with medication! Add in high BP and even worse, high cholesterol, start looking for a second mortgage!
Having spent all afternoon getting quotes, StaySure are the cheapest (it still comes out at £320 for us both). I'll keep researching though to see if I can better that! PS: you're right, noone is making anything of the PMR as I've not had to visit the hospital for this symptom.
I am in same position. Recently purchased annual insurance worldwide excluding USA and cruise. I thought the price was reasonable compared to pre PMR cost nearing in mind we've both hit over 65 threshold now. Try Staysure Insurance. BtW adding cruise really bumps up the price !!
The reason adding Cruise to a policy bumps the price up is because Cruise Lines insist on including repatriation cover which could include a lengthy and expensive helicopter ride if the ship is at sea when one is struck down.
Our insurance is high as my husband had a heart attack -I forgot to add my PMR and when I went back to do it they said it was was £1.22 extra - single trip with Saga
I paid £200 more than hubby as a single trip insurance within Europe just for being on anticoagulents and beta blockers. I'm dreading trying to get insurance now I'm also on pred, AA, PPIs etc!
That is more than the annual cost for my insurance here in northern Italy - which covers me for air repatriation, funeral costs and a few other things too. No questions asked about existing conditions, though I think there are exclusions for conditions that required in-patient care in a defined period before travel which mean you require a doctor's statement you were fit to travel if anything does happen. This is through the White Cross charity which effectively runs our ambo service. Three levels of cover: local and the world at 2 different levels. My previous insurance was an Austrian company - and when I asked them about specific illnesses, not interested, "You are covered".
I really don’t think it will cost much more for the PMR add ons. But mine for all angina, cholesterol, high BP etc went up to between £800 and £900 until I found Staysure. Under £300 for multi trip anywhere in the world apart from US.
I’ve just come back from Caribbean and took annual world wide cover through the Post Office, PMR is not notifiable but my diabetes obviously was, the cost was well under £200 , I’m over 70 too, so I thought that exceptionally good value as it covers all my holidays for the next 12 months
Do you mean the PO insurance Dora? It used to be by far the cheapest. To be fair we don't go away on holiday much. Last time was to Tallinn, where our second son lives, in 2018.
When others wouldn’t take me due to medical ‘stuff’ (lloyds bank & Insurancewith) I found Staysure. Took a joint annual policy with them. However, 2 years ago it was over £1,000. Really have to travel a lot to make it worthwhile, but at least they accepted us! We usually spend about 8- 10 weeks abroad a year. Insurancewith was started by a lady who had cancer & couldn’t get travel insurance. They were reasonable in Year 1, then declined to offer me insurance next year. But adding PMR didn’t make the policy higher (but it was in the middle of a policy Year). Some have found Boots reasonable. And Saga. But I haven’t used them! Good luck!
It's LV for me. Pretty good cover and reasonable. They all have a hissy fir if there are cardiac type issues. I think it is the high cholesterol alongside BP that does it.
We’ve just found a really great price with LV, herdysheep (thanks for the recommendation, btw). £272 for us both, multi trips, with “our ailments “. It’s excellent cover, too😀
We live in the UK. You'll have to tell the insurance company about your condition. PMR is not a waived condition but AXA didn't charge me anything for declaring it and I only have to tell them about any changes, otherwise it rolls over from year to year. We decided to open a Co-op Bank "Everyday Extra" account. You have to be under 80 and there are rules about staying in credit (of course) but as well as online banking, for your £15 a month sub you get Worldwide Travel insurance (with AXA) for 2 , Roadside vehicle cover in UK and Europe with the RAC (for 2 people) and Mobile phone cover which all of which was much better value than the alternatives....if you've got an elderly motor home!
