Irritable bladder and Ad-Cal

Once again this forum has proved to be the BEST source of support and info! I have been suffering badly from almost constant stinging for months. Trying lots of different treatments, nothing worked. Felt exhausted as I was getting little sleep. Saw the post about calcium supplements and stopped taking them. Within a few days much better and after a week plus irritation almost gone!!! Thank you so much everyone for dicussing the topic on here i would never have made the connection otherwise,

Brilliant! I cut down the dose and went up until I found a level that didn’t irritate. Or you can go for food input.

I am lucky enough to be down to 2mg pred starting journey to 1.5 this week so I am hoping that coming off ad-cal will be ok. I have started having yoghurt 'smoothies' for lunch and I have porridge with milk for breakfast. Also eat a lot of sweet potato, butternut squash, broccoli, spinach and oily fish. I am still taking a high dose Vit D everyday so I am hoping that will be enough. Any other suggestions gratefully received 👍 Thanks so much for your reply,

Much the same as I do - gave up the calcium a couple of years ago at least and rely on dietary calcium and 4000 IU vit D - at the last dexascan it seemed to be OK

I have Interstitial Cystitis; is this caused by calcium too? I don’t take any supplements except cod liver oil and vitamin D and my diet is full of dairy.

Not usually - it is a condition in its own right. Calcium supplements can make it worse but there is also medication to calm it down when that isn't enough.

Thank you

I had the same experience. If I get cystitis symptoms now I find that Mannose - D deals with it. I do think that long term Pred can also cause some sensitivity of the mucus membranes. I stopped taking Adcal but have a calcium rich diet and take high dose vitamin D.

Is it ok to take with pred?

Yes - it is just a form of sugar that encourages the bacteria to be flushed outl

It works very quickly. Buy the powdered form. The tablets are ridiculously huge. Great stuff. Perfectly safe.

And it can be beneficial for men as well as women . My Uncle took it along with cranberry supplements because of recurrent UTIs associated with his prostate issues , it worked well for him. His D Mannose was prescribed by the bladder clinic.

Yes , I'm another D- Mannose user since having this years awful three month issue. I also drink a cranberry and apple juice each day and plenty of water. When I was on steroids I had a similar problem with recurring bladder and kidney infections , I reduced the calcium and increased calcium in my diet until , like Pro , I did not need the Calcium supplement ( above what I get in my diet and daily vitamin/ mineral tablet ) but I kept up the Vitamin D , and will take the extra Vit D long term , but that is because of my other health issues rather than my GCA/ PMR which is in remission.

Hi, I had the same problem, but I switched to calcium citrate and that fixed it.
