Medical bracelet/necklace

It has been suggested that I wear a medical bracelet or necklace as my endocrinologist thinks I have adrenal suppression. Could I have some suggestions as to what to write on it please. My brain is totally blank at the moment !

I am in the same position as you, adrenal suppression....and feeling dteadful.....I am going to get a bracelet because my GP and End o refuse to supply me with emergency HC injections...even though I had a very low cortisol reading....I would probably put a date on the bracelet stating adrenal suppression.....

I have a blank brain too!....

Thanks Longtimer - the fatigue is dreadful at times. My readings also very low.

Interested in how low your cortisol level is ? Did they tell you the level ? Thanks so much

And how much pred are you on ? I thought above 7.5 the readings would be very low ? 😊

Can I ask what is your reading ? How low ? 😊

Yes of couese, I am on 7 mg pred, my cortisol 9am reading was 92....this surprised my Rheumatologist, but I have been on pre d 10 years. I lowered from 9mg of pred very quickly for a Pet scan, I didn't get pain, but severe fatigue, and to some degree still have. That was about end of May ....Are you battling with adrenal s too?

Ballywilliam in reply to Longtimer

Ah that’s interesting . I’m just wondering what to expect with levels as plan is to wean me for PET scan . I thought that under 7.5 mg the cortisol levels would be almost nothing as receiving above what adrenals would make normally - so adrenals have no reason to kick in ?

Longtimer profile image
Longtimer in reply to Ballywilliam

It varies with people, but will say I got to 7 mg on day of scan, they rung me and said I must be at 5mg for a few days before it!....so be prepared for that.Scan showed no inflammation, not even for PMR....

I am going to be brave and next week drop half mg very slowly, to Hope to nudge the adrenals.....having another cortisol test in December....

Good luck....

Lauren’s Hope sells some nice ones. Mine has GCA, on Actemra. I also have the drugs I am allergic to and my heart issues.

Thanks Baxternoni. I googled Laurens's Hope, unfortunately it is in America. They have some great bracelets !

Just something like "long term corticosteroid user - likely adrenal suppression". Maybe a contact number?

NursePeggy profile image
NursePeggy in reply to PMRpro

Thanks PMRpro. Should I put the amount of steroid I am on ? There is a limited amount of space on these medic alert

Bracelets.

But the pred dose varies surely? Have you a smartphone? That might be a good place to put more details? There are ways to allow paramedics to access that sort of info.

NursePeggy profile image
NursePeggy in reply to PMRpro

Yes I have a smartphone. I will ask my grandson to help me with that !

Useful things them grandsons - not that ours is much use, too far away! And all he does is wizz, wizz, wizz and you are none the wiser for next time!

NursePeggy in reply to PMRpro

I am very lucky, my two grandsons are in the next street to mine. Mind you, they were overseas until seven years ago. I have to ask them to slow down and repeat everything several times !

Has your Rheumatologist notified the emergency services?....mine told me he has .......just hope they aren:t needed!

NursePeggy profile image
NursePeggy in reply to Longtimer

I dont know, it wasnt mentioned to me. Thanks for the info, I shall call to find out.

Longtimer in reply to NursePeggy

Yes, he said in conversation that he had notified the emergency services to my situation in case I am alone and have an adrenal crisis.....

I have gone all italic...and didn`t feel a thing!.....I blame it on my jumbled head!

I actually got mine from Amazon-it has ‘steroids’ engraved on it and many do. If you do a search for ‘steroid jewellery’ there are lots available

Mine from Amazon (very cheap) is a rubber band bracelet which never comes off saying Medical Alert.... Steroid Dependent. The blue steroid card is in my wallet with the current dose on it. All sorted!

I have a leather one and it has different coloured metal rings and each one is engraved with my conditions and medication that anyone would need to be aware of. .

I've bought a rubber bracelet from Amazon with 'steroid dependant' on it plus I have an 'emergency' bracelet in which I've written my current dose and husbands contact details just in case of accident as I'm going out and about a lot more on my own.

Thank you Photojournalist. I now have a very good idea of what to buy etc. Everyone has been very kind and helpful. Good luck !

I wear a wrist band (some form of polymer but not sure what) saying Steroid Medicated. I mostly carry my smart phone but it’s password protected, but I have my Steroid record card in the case. (Same for Clopidogrel and I’m looking for an appropriate wrist band - blood thinners?)

For those with a smart phone it is worth considering downloading an app called, "In Case of Emergency" .I first heard of it some years ago through my local Ramblers group.

We were encouraged to download it and if our phones were not suitable to keep a note of important details with us.

I lead WI walks so we copied the idea and we all, even those of us who have a smart phone keep a postcard sized information sheet in the front pocket of our walking bags.

Name

Address

Phone number of Next of Kin or preferred contact and name

GP and address and phone number

Medical conditions

Medications

Allergies

These are the things I have suggested we note down and everyone is happy with that. No-one of course see's the information unless it is an emergency and access is required. I do also keep a postcard in my handbag.

It is worth looking at The app, very easy to change and update.

May I suggest you post this as a new thread - it is excellent advice that will benefit many of us. And perhaps others have similar ideas.

Thanks Judyliz. This sounds an excellent idea. My daughter has one of those machines which can cover paper/card with plastic ( or something similar ). I cant remember what it is called. It will protect it from disintegrating.
