Do I have to go into work

Canarylady profile image
68 Replies

Hi everyone,

Can anyone help me please,I m being bullied by my boss s,as some of u know I m a housekeeper/cook,one of their daughters has come down with the virus,I live in but not with them.

I m now on a lower dose of pred 10mg,but feel I shouldn’t go into work.

They are being nasty about me not going in!

She tested positive yesterday, but they are saying she s been symptomatic from last Sunday.

And I was working then so should go in to work.

Can anyone help me please on what to do.

Many thanks everyone

Ruth

Short Answer is 'You do not go into work' keep away as far as you can.

Were you in contact with them before she was diagnosed with Covid?

You also need to get a test as soon as possible and if you cannot get to your GP, contact 111 now.

Having an auto-immune illness makes you more vulnerable and make sure that your GP and 111 understand you have PMR.

I know this might not be as helpful as I would like it to be your health comes first.

Others will be along and perhaps have better answers to your situation, in the meantime contact the medical professionals.

Good morning jinasc,Thank you much for your advice,it’s very helpful.

I have just had a phone call from my doctor saying not to go in,due to everything you ve said.

I hope your keeping well.

I m putting myself first for a change!and not them!

Well that is rather selfish of them, particularly as you are in a vulnerable group. It puts you in an impossible situation because this is your home as well. I think they would be on dodgy ground in an employment tribunal for constructive dismissal. Unfortunately we now incur costs for tribunals. My future plans would include seeking alternative employment with a better employer. Are you double vaccinated? What would be their attitude if you contracted Covid? Is it possible to do your job in protective gear in a way that doesn’t expose you directly? Will they supply protective gear? Being bullied at work is a serious matter legally. You could contact ACAS for some impartial advice. Are you fit for work? Do you need this job? You could seek advice from the Jobcentre too.Good luck! I am sorry that you find yourself in this awful situation. Do you get the Lady Magazine? Great jobs often appear there.

Morning sheffieldjane

Thank you getting back to me.

I ve had both vaccines,so fingers crossed I ll be ok.

Just had call from my doctor saying I need to self isolate from them so it’s all been written down so if I need any back up it’s there.

I putting myself first for a change!

Funny you should say the lady magazine!

I had a call from them last Thursday asking if I was looking for a job,I wasn’t at the time but thought I d see what it was,so I drove up Saturday morning for an interview and just a few minutes ago had a call from the lady magazine saying they are offering me the position!

It’s a fantastic job and very interesting too.

I have a lovely lady who does most of the cleaning and I ll help her,but my main job is cooking.

Hope your keeping well,

Take care

Strangely I got my first 'proper' job through the Lady magazine - and it was looking after children in the South of France! I was aged 17 (didn’t want to do a 6th year at school). I always feel that that job changed the direction of my life (in a good way). Didn’t know the magazine was still on the go. It seemed very old fashioned even back in the mid 1970s when I got that job!

Canarylady profile image
Canarylady in reply to Highlandtiger

Yes the magazine is still going,it’s still a good read too.R

Also the magazine is on line if that’s any help to you?

Take care

If you have been in close contact with her since (including) Sunday I presume you will need to self isolate for 10 days, whatever the family think. Secondly with your Autoimmune disease exactly as Jinasc says.

Canarylady profile image

Thank you getting back to meBcol.I haven’t been in since Friday, but my doctor says no going in.

I don’t want to catch the virus even if the others are negative in the household.

I hope you are keeping well and safe.

Many thanks for all your help.

What an unreasonable employer. Fantastic you have been offered another job. Your current employer will not improve, so I do hope things go well. You can get hold of a PCR test at gov.uk/get-coronavirus-test they should deliver to you.

Definitely do not go to work!! You should self isolate and get tested. It's not fair that you are being pressured. We all need to look after each other at times like these. All the best.

When I read your post I had a response in my head ready to type out, then as I read further on, I saw that everything had turned out for the best for you! I’m so pleased, and well done on being brave enough to apply for another job, as it takes a lot of courage, especially with PMR. Sometimes it’s easier to stay put and avoid the upheaval, but you took that step, and now you’re ready for a wonderful new change with lovely accommodation, where hopefully you’ll be appreciated and supported. ☺️

Isn’t it amazing how life can change in the wink of an eye! All the very best Canarylady, enjoy your new life x

Tough call. Have you contacted your M.D? They might be able to offer better info. I do know if it was me, I wouldn't go. Life is too short to risk a serious illness for one day of pay (as much as it might be needed as I do understand that).

It does not cease to amaze me how evil and self centered some people have become. I have a friend who works at our local vets office One of her co-workers came to work with Covid, and she knew she had it. She infected my friend who got the illness and nearly died from it. 5 days in hospital with pneumonia. Your boss's inability to envision you ill and hooked up to a ventilator is a symptom of a sickness of self absorption that has infected both sides of the Atlantic. It is worse than Covid, and more heart breaking. Do not go near those people until your doctor say it is okay.

PMRpro profile image
PMRproAmbassador in reply to phebamom

I suspect if the person was reported to the police she could be charged if they could prove she knew she had it and went to work. She'd be in trouble here - even someone breaking quarantine and just walking down the street will be charged here.

phebamom profile image

Here in the US things are a lot more lax. School starts soon with few mask mandates and the Delta variant raging. I am deeply concerned.

Canarylady profile image

Hi phebamomI am so sorry to hear about your friend,I do hope she is getting better bless her.

How awful that that person knew she was infected!

How could she do that to her work colleagues it’s disgraceful.

Thank you for getting in touch with me,I hope you are ok too.

Please keep in touch.
