Steroids and cataracts

I had an eye test last week and was told I have developed steroid related cataracts (as opposed to age related). Something to get checked out for those with blurry vision. The optician also suggested a slight tint for my lenses to help with the extra light sensitivity they cause. The best news is my GCA has not done any damage to my eyes thanks to a quick diagnosis and treatment by my GP.

Hi Waves

I replied to another post on Specs and Cataracts.

Extract below:

"Re-actolite rapide is the way to go if you already wear specs. My Optician once she knew I had GCA changed my specs to re-actolite rapide.

At that time I had the beginning of cataracts and they have never grown since my specs were changed. Even though I have been in remission and off pred for quite some time they have still not grown. Fingers crossed.

Pred and sunshine just don't like each other and can cause cataracts to start and existing ones to grow."

I remember seeing this now. Good advice. I spend a lot of time outdoors so it is important to know.

Timely reminder to return to my regular eye monitoring after shielding. Thanks!

Yes..I had postponed several times because of shielding but better late than never.

Good news on GCA front, and good advice from jinasc on cataracts. I have re-actolite glasses, but I also wear sunglasses a lot of the time, winter as well as summer. But then I have to be very mindful - only sighted eye already has cataract replacement.

So, so much to keep aware of with PMR/GCA. This forum helps so much as many topics come back around just when you need them and everyone's experiences keep building your own information pack. Let's hope the sun continues to shine though and that we need our sunglasses this summer..

Doesn't need to be bright summer sunshine, as I said, winter and filtered by cloud ...you need them.

Once you get reacolite /transitional lenses you'll be surprised how much little extra light you need to change them.
