It was very hot here in Tasmania yesterday - 38 degrees. I had retreated to my hammock under the wisteria and was reading my latest book (According to Yes by Dawn French - highly recommended!) when BANG the rope snapped and deposited me on my back on the brick courtyard - OUCH!!! I am so lucky that nothing dire happened but it is bruised and sore today. Dear Hubby raced out and brought some HEFTY chain - he couldn't believe the strong nylon rope had snapped (although possibly one of his knots had failed but we're not mentioning that!). The chain has a weight limit of 500 kg which SHOULD do the trick?
Apart from trying to lose the 15 kgs of pred weight I have gained does anyone think I should up my pred (I am on 6 and a half) for a few days according to Sick Day Rules. My back is very sore...................

Thank you for the book recommendation. Wasn't it a hot couple of days (I'm in Victoria). Not sure about upping the pred although I'm sure the tumble was stressful. I'd try pain killers first.
Ouch! I’m wincing at the thought! Perhaps the book was extra heavy? Oh, 38 degrees sounds like heaven right now here in the UK, though if it was we’d all be complaining.
Personally, unless I was feeling effects of shock due to adrenal insufficiency I wouldn’t increase. You are bruised but not flaring and it would be reassuring to get through this on your own. I would ask myself, “yes I’m bruised and battered, but do I really need it to get through?” Traumatic bruising and inflammation tends to reach a peak at 48 hours. Also, this is a fall so be prepared for all sorts of pains, not just the bit that hit the ground; even whiplash. That’s just my opinion and I’m sure you’ll get others. Happy healing!
Thanks Snazzy. I am indeed feeling it in different parts of my body by today ( third day since fall). However I have successfully stayed on 6 and a half mgs pred. I've stood my ground....!
Gosh that sounds awful 😖 l’m sure you are going to be very sore, l’d certainly be taking some painkillers & maybe some Arnica Gel for your back.
Much Waiting On You from Darling Husband, absolutely No Housework 😉
You’ll be able to assess yourself if you need to increase your Pred, shock may set in today/tomorrow, you are the Physiological Dose of Pred so it’s a ‘tricky’ time but see how you go, l wouldn’t if l didn’t think l needed to.
Take lots of care & give us all an update in a day or two. We have Snow ⛄️ so enjoy your weather & your beautiful wisteria!
Thank you dear Mrs Nails! Its the third day now & my back is still very sore and I'm taking it very easy! No sign of a flare though so I'm sticking with 6 and a half mgs pred which is the lowest dose Ive ever got to in nearly four years. On the Hubby waiting on me front I'm playing it for all its worth - see my reply to Granny Jane below!
I think I would. That kind of accident is such a shock to the system. I find the Homoeopathic remedy Arnica 30 is great for falls with shock. I was feeling jealous until the rope snapped. I love Wisteria and Jacaranda.
Thank you dear Sheffield Jane. I'm doing okay now though the back is still very sore I've managed to stay at current pred dose with no sign of flare.Add in a glorious display of shasta daisies and sunflowers which is the view from the now mended hammock ( though my back isn't up to getting in or out at present). However just to stop you all in the Northern Hemisphere feeling too jealous of our sunshine, today is very overcast and cool.
There is a medical article saying that a fall is enough to trigger a flare - so watch out for that but bruises and sore muscles from trauma won't improve with pred. As for sick day rules, I think I would be watchful for any signs of adrenal problems but would wait and see.
No need to rub it in - -13C here for breakfast ...
Some daft beggar here cut a neat hole in the ice to have a dip. It was for charity, but still strikes me as daft. Cutting the ice and sliding it back like a door was clever though.
Not sunbathing but swimming in the Lakes, using pick axes to clear away the ice first. This in Cumbria!! Not me though, long sleeved vest and snuggly jumpers!
Halfway up a mountain in the north. October was the wettest, November the sunniest, December the snowiest and January the coldest of each for decades!!!
Hi Louisa, hope your bruising and shock is only short lived, just enjoy the sunshine! You mentioned weight gain as well and after only 3months on pred. I have gained 3 lbs which won’t shift despite daily exercise and healthy diet. I kid myself it is my Winter fat layer which will drop off when warmer weather and more living outdoors comes. However, you are in your Summer and I think many of us battle with this issue whatever the time of year.Does anyone have an effective diet? Would be so grateful to try it.
Nearly the end of this interminable January, although the snow was a happy diversion last week-end.
Hi Granny Jane.If I knew what I know now, when I was first diagnosed with PMR back in May 2017, I would have severely restricted all carbs and been very strict with myself.
As it was, I think I had the attitude " Oh well, I'm going to gain weight anyway". It was almost a self fulfilling prophecy!
Plenty of people on this wonderful site have successfully lost weight by restricting carbs . Carbs are what packs it on whilst on pred.
Now I just need LOTS of self disicipline................
But, for now, my lovely Hubby is bringing me breakfast in bed with our own free range eggs & home made bread toasted into fingers to dip into the golden yoke.
Have done the Scuba Diving Club's 1st Jan Chilly Dip a few times, but that was encased in a Dry Suit and that was bad enough. The 2019 Chilly Dip was the worst when the neck seal didn't. Didn't seal that is and flooded the suit with icy cold water. Dive over in about 30 seconds!!
