VitaminD levels & magnesium

I was just wondering if many of you have checked your Vit D levels. I assumed that taking Vitcal D for the last 6 years my levels would be good. When I’ve had bloods done they have never included Vit D. So I sent off to Medicheck and was surprised when the results came back at the low end at 60.7. So an over the counter supplement has been obtained after a chat with the doc who thought it was a good idea. Whilst on the phone I asked about Magnesium supplements as on a low carb forum it’s always being recommended. The doc thought it was not a good idea and can cause issues with the heart. She convinced me when saying she would not be happy with recommending it for her father to take.

Yes it would be a surprise. I was vit D deficient at the beginning of PMR and understand that this alone can give rise to PMR symptoms. I take Magnesium when I remember which is probably a good idea.

I have had my vit D levels checked - they were lowish despite me spending a lot of time outside in the sun. Since then I have taken vit D supplements, at least 2,000 IU, in winter 4,000 IU.

I think she is worrying unnecessarily - but then, probably so are you! We do recommend magnesium for people who have muscle cramps - because pred makes you lose more magnesium from the diet through the kidneys, just like calcium. Here in middle Europe where I live the first thing the GP will ask if you complain of muscle cramp is "have you tried magnesium?" and suitable dose supplements are available in every supermarket and pharmacy. It is pretty difficult to overdose on oral magnesium - too much usually has a laxative effect and you notice! I also use magnesium because I have atrial fibrillation and the local hospital uses an oral solution if you are having an episode of fast heart rate so I was discharged with the recommendation to use it as required. If you are really bad and go to the ED then you are likely to get magnesium as an infusion - that is a very different matter to oral though.

A friend of mine who was a physiotherapist before retiring says often when she got new patients with aches and pains and told them to go get their Vit D levels checked they are deficient and once on it rapidly improve, not needing any therapy after all. I take magnesium glycinate daily and it keeps leg cramps away. Whenever my electrolytes get measured they're fine. I've never heard anyone say magensium is dangerous, sports people use it a lot

Sounds like a non-cardiologist who knows magnesium is used in cardiac medicine for certain things.

Fair point

Would you be able to tell me where you source your magnesium glycinate from and what dosage please??

in reply toKendrew

t's important to buy good quality supplements that have no fillers in them. I buy from the internet a company called Amando Perez, for my Magnesium, sounds German. Magnesium Malate, 3000 mg per daily serving. When taking D3 (again mine is purchased from a company called 5StarLife, 3000iu) remember to take it with K2 for better absorption.

Regards

Anne

Hi Staplehurst. Thankyou for your advice. I'm a bit confused now! Professor Dasgupta prescribed me Calci-D. (Calcium and D3) but I don't have vit.K2 .....he's never mentioned that!....but presumably that's because my Calcium and Vit. D were all ok when I had blood tests done a month ago?

in reply toKendrew

I don't wish to be disrespectful re doctors or consultants but they know very little, if anything about supplementation. As I've mentioned on this forum quite a lot, a friend of mine is a nutritionist and studied a lot re vits. and the best ones to buy, Boron is another good one too. You can google these two and see what you think. I take Adcal that has D3 in it too, but we also need K2 as well. Then later in the day I take another D3. I'd like to bring my D level up higher than 96 that my last blood test showed. 150 is ideal.

Thankyou. Do you take magnesium supplements also?

in reply toKendrew

Yes I do. It's in the message above. I think the brand I buy is German. In my first message above

With a name like Amando Perez, German would be at the bottom of my potential nationality list! ;)

in reply toPMRpro

Whre would you say it's from ?

I buy a brand called Meta Relax via Amazon, not cheap but works well for me and glycinate form is easier on the stomach, I can't tolerate other forms of magnesium like phosphate or stearate

That comment about magnesium supplements really surprises me. However if you are taking extra Calcium it is in fact a good idea to make sure your Magnesium is still in balance with the calcium. The body prefers calcium and if you get too much calcium in relation to the magnesium you may not actually absorb the magnesium you are getting. That's why it's a good idea to take magnesium supplements at a different time than calcium supplements. Some supplements include both and I assume it's to help maintain the balance. All that being said, our diet should be quite high in magnesium anyway as magnesium is to plants what iron is to animals. I don't suppose Vitamin D affects magnesium.

I use liquid magnesium for easier uptake. Remag.purenaturals.co.uk/product/...

I realize this is a bit late, but I receive 2g Mg/wk IV in addition to taking Triple Calm Mg ( 2 caps at night). This is in addition to 25g Vitamin C/wk IV. I'll post later on my experiences when I temporarily stopped the IV's.
