I just listened - fascinating on her life and interesting quirky choices, also very funny backhanded compliment to Melvyn Bragg! Most importantly she raised the crucial importance of early diagnosis and treatment of GCA to prevent blindness. I hope my ex-GP was listening...
Dorothy Byrne on Desert Island Discs: I just... - PMRGCAuk
Dorothy Byrne on Desert Island Discs
Thanks for posting. I will catch it on the radio iPlayer thingy.
Highly unlikely - the people who need to listen never do!!
I'm a Radio 4 addict and rarely miss DID. I'm supposed to have given up The Archers for Lent. Since I don't drink or smoke and have already given up chocolate and cake, I'm a bit stuck for ideas! Not sure I'll make it - the withdrawal symptoms are terrible...
I gave up computer games and took up some long set-aside needlepoint (aka tapestry).
You could always introduce a positive factor?
I know. That's what Sister Angela at convent school always drummed into us, but I just respond well to a bit of deprivation.
Going for a walk is deprivation of a seat in front of the TV ...
Maybe, but I'm not sure since thinking of a walk that way robs it of its pleasurable aspect. Anyway I must confess that I've just caught up with The Archers on BBC Sounds! Tomorrow I'll finish the milk, eggs and cheese that I've got and go vegan for the rest of Lent. I've done that before with good results weight-wise.
Give up the Archers? Never..
Goodness - is that still running after all these years? I'm out of touch with things in England.
I remember that was on our local radio (in Canada) when I was quite a young child. We used to get a lot of English radio programs, Take it from Here, Hancock's Half Hour, My Word, Life with the Lyons. Radio better than tv in so many ways. At least you can get on with other things as your eyes don't have to be locked onto a screen!
Listened to it too. What a fabulous woman.
B£gger.. I forgot... Oh well podcast it is.
Like you I’ve become addicted to DID recently (part of turning into my late mother I think - during her final stay in hospital before she died she complained about the 'rubbish' that was on the radio in the ward particularly as it was a Sunday and she was missing DID.....).
Have just caught up with this on the BBC Sounds App now that I’m back from a nice coastal walk (wasn't going to miss getting out on a rare sunny calm day) and it’s well worth listening to. She gave PMR/GCA a really good mention, had lots of amusing anecdotes, had an eclectic choice of music and as a bonus I now know who to listen to if I can’t sleep at night 😉 💤.....
If anybody forgets about BBC Sounds it's broadcast again on Friday at 9 a.m.
I've just listened to it now - very interesting. The theme music took me back a bit!
I thought Dorothy Byrne was very entertaining and quite delightful, - I do hope plenty of doctors were tuning in over a Sunday morning coffee - and her Guardian article is excellent.
Like others I'm a DID addict and love the eclectic mix of people and music - even when it's someone I've never heard of, or am not particularly interested in, the programme is always so interesting and people's stories fascinating and often moving. I feel quite bereft when the series finishes and is replaced by something else for a few months.
Love DID!! The range of folk , some I’ve never heard of , so interesting. When I can’t sleep, which is often, I listen from my phone with my headphones on , so don’t disturb my hubby!! Not listened to yesterday’s yet!!
