Oil of oregano

Do you know if it’s okay to take oil of oregano with prednisone?

Years before having PMR I used it to get over the flu. My cough was gone in two days. I have a huge cough now and on antibiotics for it.

Any opinions welcomed. I have to be better for my cataract surgery this Thursday. Thanks

This is what i found online

Interactions between your drugs

No interactions were found between oregano and prednisone. This does not necessarily mean no interactions exist. Always consult your healthcare provider

Hope that helps.YBB

According to this

webmd.com/vitamins/ai/ingre...

it is OK with pred although they do not mention antidiabetic medications and anticoagulants which other sources do. You shouldn't take it with lithium.

Thanks. I use cinnamon for my A1C. No lithium thank goodness.

I have list of vitamins as long as my arm I split up over the day. I may add the oregano back in to see if it gets rid of the cough.

I take no vitamins bar vit D - most others really aren't worth it except in very specific cases, a good diet is far better. Artificial vits are processed differently from those in food and more isn't always better - too much of some can increases risks. If your diet is deficient in any way then maybe some supplementation can be justified - but really, only then.

I hear you about having a good diet.

But I also have read in books by people with pmr giving a list of vitamins to help with pmr.

It gets so confusing.

So I take calcium to protect my bones.

I take magnesium to keep leg cramps away at night.

I take copper/zinc because my gynecologist recommended it to help get off prednisone as he did in six months. He has pmr and just suffered a major heart attack and is a lifetime Seventh Day Adventist.

I take Omega 3 to protect my heart.

I take potassium because it is drained by the steroids and you can’t eat enough bananas.

I take vitamin D3 because we are all deficient.

On and on and all as high quality as can be.

So you say I can stop them all but vitamin D?

I truly do want to know. Thanks

I take vit D and calcium and I also use magnesium - not for cramps but for atrial fibrillation. I used to take it if I had cramps but not constantly.

It isn't a good idea to take potassium without medical advice - you may lose some because of pred but too much potassium can be quite dangerous. Unless your GP has done your electrolytes and told you your potassium is low I wouldn't take supplements - but mainly because the amount allowed in them is miniscule and you are probably paying through the nose for them, lots of lovely things with potassium, not just bananas, spend your money on them.

health.harvard.edu/staying-...

Personally I wouldn't listen too closely to what a 7th D.A. recommended in the way of medicine!

I eat oily fish - I don't take omega 3 because I have atrial fibrillation

health.harvard.edu/staying-...

is another fairly clear and unbiased article - are you in the risk groups where it appears to have an effect? Do you eat less than 1 1/2 helpings of oily fish a week?

As I say, it really isn't a case of more is always better,

My potassium level when tested are on the lowest range of normal while taking the supplement. My blood pressure medicine is not an ace inhibitor. So I think I’m okay at this point. Fresh oily fish is not readily available where I live in the USA. It’s much more expensive then the omega 3 I take.

I’ll consider all you have said. It’s very helpful. Thanks

After years on Prednisone I have learned if your going to reduce, do a half mg. at a time and slowly. It’s quality of life for me, with at the moment still at 15 after my spinal fusion back surgery in October, my energy had a hard time returning even at 15, so I certainly wasn’t in no hurry to reduce. Remember to take your calcium and vitamin D daily it will keep your bones in check.

PMR is rough, but if you don’t rush the reducing you’ll do much better. Blessings to all💕

I’ve taken all your advice on tapering slowly in spite of my Rheumatologist. I’m at 14 mg and will wait till March most likely to go to 13.5mg which will be after my two cataract surgeries. Thanks

I think it is a bit extreme to say your soft tissues will calcify if you don't take vit K2!!

I have taken Re-Mag which is a liquid for years until the past five months. Now I take a high quality mag in capsule form. What mcg should I take of vitamin K2?

My omega 3 is from a special nutrition store. I’ve always watched out to not buy cheaply made vitamins. I’ve studied the use of vitamins since I was in my early twenties. I miscarried four times and therefore tried to take good care of my health so to hopefully carry my babies to term.

I know it’s hard to know what each of us who write on this form are already knowledgeable about so I understand why your comments are quite direct.

I am so happy to have your knowledge added to what I already have researched.

I hope to reassure you that I have had blood test to see if my vitamin regimen is not harming me or wasting my money. As I’m able to drop things from my list I certainly will do so happily.

I’m also blessed to have a husband who has retired as an excellent physician assistant. Loved by all his patients and saved many a life. He has experienced several patients with PMR but is certainly open to learning more on the care of me. He is happy that I have connected with you all.

Thanks for your help!

Yes, but not taking doesn't inevitably mean that your tissues will calcify.
