I'm on 50mg Prednisolone daily and wonder if that's the cause of a permanent metallic taste in my mouth. Does anyone else have this problem? I find my sense of taste has been really affected.
Cause of metallic taste?: I'm on 50mg Prednisolone... - PMRGCAuk
Cause of metallic taste?
Hi MrsChips, I am sure someone on higher dose like you can help more. But if I remember rightly GCA can cause a loss of taste so it could cause altered tastes. I wonder if you are on amitryipline or aspirin as I have found they caused taste differences and a post nasal drip too. Is that enough to choose from! I honestly just wonder if it might be the GCA at first then went on a ramble. Hope someone comes up with something. 🤔🌻
Hi,
Personally I can’t recall my taste buds being altered on high doses of Pred, but it has been mentioned on here before - as you can see from the related posts- might be worth reading them.
As Poopadoop says it may be due to a combination of medication rather than the Pred per se - plus thrush can be a side effect - so possibly it’s connected to that.
Is there any possibility of silent gastric reflux? That can cause a strange taste too.
I have had thrush in my mouth several times since starting on prednisolone. That has given me an awful taste.
I had the metal taste until I was down to about 10mg. Don't worry, it goes eventually.
I had a metallic taste in my mouth when I was anaemic.
I also had taste problems. Metallic when on high dosage and also noticed my taste had reduced a lot as I went on the journey. Now much better but not 100% yet. It will go though.
Yes. Some medications (like antibiotics) can cause this. Could be a Vitamin B or iron deficiency. Chew sugar-free gum.
Silent reflux was the cause in my case. Everything tasted bad. Was prescribed PPI which solved the problem.
I had the same problem for a while when I was on high dose Pred. Even went to a dentist to check it out, but he found nothing. It went away on its own. And yes, my taste went wacky too. For me, most if not all the weird and wonderful (not) things I felt were side effects of Pred, not GCA.
I had a metallic taste in my mouth which was due to shortage of vit.b12 pernicious anemia
I had metallic taste particularly when attempting to drink alcohol, wine and beer, as soon as starting on 15mg Pred for PMR. Only solution was G&T which had the benefit of masking the metalic taste. Effect diminished gradually in line with reduction of Pred.
A metallic taste in the mouth is a relatively common side effect of medications. ... Some common medical conditions that can cause metallic taste in the mouth include ear or upper respiratory infections such as sinusitis, as well as head injury or conditions that damage the central nervous system (CNS)
There is a trade in with all medications. It is worth while to look into alternative -natural ways to combat disorders in the body. It is easier to swallow tablets then making dietary and life style changes. The choice is ours.
Mrs Chips I also had that awful Metallic taste in my mouth when I first went on Prednisolone it slowly went away as I reduced the amount of Prednisolone I was on. It is a side affect of Prednisone for some.
Phew. I feared I was the only one with an awful taste in my mouth. I reported it to 'my' rheumatologist a while ago. She didn't seem to make much of it, and it got rather lost in all the rest of this nonsense.
I had a metallic taste as well but I had a tonsil stone! When that went my taste was fine
